While Taylor Fritz was one-and-done at the Canadian Open less than two weeks ago, he was coming off a championship run in Washington that left little time for recovery, so he should be better prepared for a long stay here in Cincinnati. 

This season, Fritz has dealt with a knee issue that caused him to miss almost the entire clay swing. However, since the beginning of June, he’s produced a 16-4 record across his last five events. In the Washington final, he defeated an in-form Rafael Jodar, a rising star who’s now ranked No. 11.

In Washington, Fritz also defeated today’s opponent, Alex Michelsen, after losing their previous two career meetings. 

Following a first-round exit at Wimbledon, Michelsen competed in two Challenger tournaments, going 8-1 and winning a hard-court event in Bloomfield Hills. He’s since won five of seven tour-level matches and is now up to a respectable 22-9 hard-court record in 2026.
