At first glance, Naomi Osaka’s campaign doesn’t necessarily leap off the page. She entered the Canadian Open with a solid, if unspectacular, 22-9 record, and she’s yet to win a title in 2026. 

But she’s coming off a very encouraging spring and summer stretch in Europe, a part of the tennis calendar when she normally struggles on clay and grass. 

Osaka went 15-5 on those surfaces while achieving career-best results at the French Open (round of 16) and Wimbledon (quarterfinals). Her only losses over this span came against Aryna Sabalenka (twice), Iga Swiatek, and Karolina Muchova (twice) — all players presently inside the top 10.

Osaka now returns to her favorite surface, and while she was knocked out of the Washington semifinals in straight sets just 10 days ago, the loss came against a red-hot Alexandra Eala, who went on to win the championship.

Here at WTA Toronto, Osaka has been on cruise control, winning all three matches in straight sets, including victories over Elise Mertens and Canada’s own Leylah Fernandez.

Elena Rybakina has enjoyed an excellent season overall, most notably winning her second major title at the 2026 Australian Open.
