It’s been a trying campaign for world No. 15 Lorenzo Musetti, who has endured multiple injuries throughout 2026. He missed time after retiring in the Australian Open quarterfinals early in the year and was once again sidelined in May, forcing him to miss both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Despite these setbacks, this is Musetti’s third tournament this summer, and he’s now strung together three consecutive victories for the first time since that Australian Open run. He also hasn’t dropped a set on his way to these quarterfinals, another promising sign.

Frances Tiafoe arrived in Cincinnati following poor results in Washington and Montreal—in addition to undergoing a minor procedure on his hand—so he was also in need of a confidence boost.

Well, he certainly got that in the last round with an emphatic 6-3, 6-4 win over world No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime. 

Tiafoe also defeated Learner Tien earlier in the tournament, giving him a pair of top-20 wins here. In fact, the American has now won five of his last six matches against top-20 opponents dating back to June. 

This is in contrast to Musetti’s rather easy road to this stage, as all three of his matches have come against players ranked well outside the top 50. He’s yet to defeat a top-30 player this summer, either, losing to Rafael Jodar twice in his previous two tournaments.  

Further, this isn’t the Italian’s preferred surface, as his 51.4% career win rate on hard courts pales in comparison to his history on clay (65.4%) and grass (62.1%).

While these two have split their head-to-head, Tiafoe does carry a slight 2-1 edge on hard courts, and he’s also won two of their last three meetings.

Musetti will also have the crowd against him with an American on the other side of the net, and Tiafoe tends to thrive when he has that home-court advantage.

In all, particularly with Musetti still not far removed from his most recent injury stint, there could be value in backing Tiafoe as the slight underdog.
