Tien entered the North American hard-court swing coming off a so-so grass season that ended with a second-round exit at Wimbledon, and he didn’t exactly make waves in Washington, going one-and-done.

Therefore, his run to the Canadian Open semifinals was a much-needed boost for his confidence. He won all four matches in straight sets — including a top-30 victory over Tommy Paul — and his loss was to eventual champion Ben Shelton.

Here in Cincinnati, Tien opened with a solid 6-3, 7-6(4) win over world No. 53 Sebastian Baez.

On European grass, Tiafoe built up some momentum with a title in Halle, but his results have fizzled ever since. He was bounced in the third round at Wimbledon and went just 1-2 across Washington and the Canadian Open.

Even more worrisome, Tiafoe retired mid-match in his Montreal loss due to a right-hand injury and actually underwent surgery on it shortly after to remove a cyst.

Despite this setback, Tiafoe took the court in Cincinnati on Sunday and proceeded to knock out Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-4. While soundly defeating Sonego is a positive sign for Tiafoe’s health, the Italian owns a losing record in 2026 and has dropped to No. 88 in the rankings.

Tien will almost certainly present a far tougher challenge.

Tien has been dealing with his own ailment the past few weeks, citing an “irritating” arm injury following his loss to Shelton in Montreal. However, it hasn’t resulted in him retiring from any matches, so he seems to be managing it well.

Put it all together, the 20-year-old Tien appears to be the more trustworthy, in-form player. He also defeated Tiafoe earlier this year on hard courts at the Delray Beach Open.

While the Tien doesn’t have the biggest serve, his opponent is often susceptible to aces. Among the top 50 players, Tiafoe has the second-worst ace rate against (13.8%) on hard courts this year.

When these two met at Delray Beach, Tien won a 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5 match. Despite this being a tight three-setter, Tien reached 18 fantasy points with the help of 13 aces.
