Jessica Pegula has enjoyed a solid summer on North American hard courts, finishing runner-up in Washington earlier this month and posting a 9-2 record. Overall, the American has enjoyed a productive season on this surface, going 28-6 while reaching the Australian Open semifinals and winning a WTA 1000 title in Dubai.
Despite all this success, she’s about to go up against a buzzsaw in Iga Swiatek.
Swiatek was in the midst of an underwhelming season by her standards before the calendar turned to August, still searching for that elusive first title of 2026. That all changed at the Canadian Open, where she defeated four straight top-20 opponents on her way to lifting the trophy.
The former world No. 1 has now won 10 matches in a row, dropping just one set here in Cincinnati. Swiatek is notoriously difficult to face when she gets on a roll like this, and as if that wasn’t enough, she’s also the defending Cincinnati Open champion.
Swiatek should be well-rested, too, as in the quarterfinals, Elena Rybakina retired due to injury just 31 minutes into their match.
Pegula’s path to these semis has been a bit more difficult after going three sets in back-to-back matches against Sorana Cirstea and Amanda Anisimova. She also took a medical timeout in her last match, and while she downplayed any injury concerns after the match, it’s possible she’s less than 100%.
Swiatek leads the head-to-head against Pegula 7-5. In their lone 2026 meeting, Swiatek defeated Pegula in straight sets at the Italian Open.
While Pegula can't be counted out entirely, Swiatek is playing perhaps her best tennis of the season and looks to be a deserving favorite to advance.
