There was plenty of buzz surrounding Carlos Alcaraz’s first-round match against Roman Safiullin, with the tennis world eager to see what level he would bring in his first singles appearance since April. Despite Safiullin’s low ranking after a significant injury last season, this was hardly a routine opening matchup for Alcaraz, given that Safiullin was a former top-40 player who had already beaten him once.

Well, things went about as well as Alcaraz could’ve hoped, as he emerged with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win.

While Alcaraz is likely relieved to get his first win back under his belt, there’s still room for improvement, particularly on serve. The Spaniard managed just 2 aces while committing 5 double faults, and although he was broken only once, he faced 6 break points against Safiullin.

His next test will be against Jaime Faria, who’s coming off a five-set win over American Jenson Brooksby.

Faria arrived in New York with just a 12-9 record in tour-level matches this season, but he’s playing with confidence following a run to the round of 16 in Cincinnati as a qualifier.

Most notably, he earned his first top-10 win over Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton in straight sets.

Despite that recent success, the 23-year-old has struggled against top-50 competition this season, going 3-6 against such opponents.

Further, Alcaraz is 6-0 against players ranked outside the top 50 this year, and two of those wins came in best-of-five at the Australian Open. 

Per Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, a healthy Alcaraz should win this match 85.1% of the time. However, we don’t know how Alcaraz’s body will hold up in just his second match back, particularly if he’s pushed beyond a third set. 

Still, Alcaraz’s first win was a promising sign of his level, and while an in-form Faria might give him more trouble, the defending US Open champion appears likely to advance again.
