When we last saw Iva Jovic, she was locked in a thrilling match against fellow rising star Alexandra Eala, and the two battled for over three hours before Jovic prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
It was an unusual match where holds were hard to come by, as the two players combined for 17 breaks of serve. Jovic won just 61% of her first-serve points and 42% of her second-serve points but also won 51% of her receiving points.
While the two played perhaps the match of the tournament thus far, Jovic may have to serve better to have a shot at beating Gauff. While Gauff still has occasional issues with double faults, she possesses a much more dangerous serve than Eala, so break point opportunities might be harder to come by.
Gauff also hasn’t dropped a set through three rounds, with wins over Zeynep Sonmez, Paula Badosa, and Cristina Bucsa.
The two-time major champion has been on a torrid run dating back to Wimbledon this summer, too, winning 18 of her last 20 matches and taking home the Cincinnati Open title. Her only losses have been to top-10 players Elena Rybakina and Karolina Muchova, both of which went to three sets.
On the other hand, Jovic arrived in New York following early exits in both Toronto and Cincinnati, with her two losses coming against players ranked outside the top 20.
According to Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, Gauff is showing an 80.9% win probability. That might not be giving Jovic enough credit, who’s playing at a high level, but Gauff comes in with loads of momentum and Grand Slam experience, which could end up being the deciding factor.
