Alexandra Eala has blitzed through her first two opponents in New York, beating Mary Stoiana 6-1, 6-2 before dispatching Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-4. She’s been broken on serve just twice so far.
However, a much tougher test awaits in the form of Iva Jovic, who has had Eala’s number this season.
Not only has Jovic beaten Eala in both of their meetings this season, but she’s done so in straight sets each time. At the French Open, Jovic won 6-4, 6-2 before repeating the feat a couple of weeks later at Queen’s Club, where she cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Eala has built up plenty of momentum since that second loss, going 16-5 while racking up six wins over top-20 opponents.
On the other hand, Jovic dealt with an ankle issue over the summer that forced her to miss some tournaments. While she still managed to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon, she won just two matches in Toronto and Cincinnati combined ahead of the US Open.
Still, Jovic also hasn’t dropped a set through two rounds, defeating Magdalena Frech and qualifier Francesca Jones. Even with those results, recent form would seem to favor Eala while the head-to-head favors Jovic.
Their first two meetings came on clay and grass, and according to Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, Eala could have the edge on hard courts. The model ranks the Filipina 13th on the surface compared to 23rd for Jovic, giving Eala a 61.3% win probability.
Between that and the fact that Eala is likely to still have plenty of support despite facing an American, she probably shouldn’t be counted out — even with the one-sided nature of this budding rivalry so far.
