Considering the star-studded field this tournament opened with, Brandon Nakashima may seem like a somewhat surprising semifinalist.
Yet, the 25-year-old American has been crushing it all summer, reaching the semifinals in Washington, finishing runner-up at the Canadian Open, and now making a run to the Cincinnati Open semis. He’s now 12-2 across those three events, and he’s knocked off some big names along the way, including victories in Cincinnati over Daniil Medvedev and, most recently, Taylor Fritz.
Nakashima has now won five of his last seven matches against top-20 opponents. He’s on track to move up to No. 16 in the live ATP rankings, which would be a career best.
However, Nakashima will now be up against an opponent who’s dominated their head-to-head. Frances Tiafoe has won six of seven career matches against Nakashima, which includes a win in Acapulco this season.
Tiafoe has also found his form, though things didn’t quite click until he arrived in Cincinnati. After winning just one match across his previous two events, the 28-year-old has flipped the switch, dropping just one set en route to the semifinals.
Most notably, Tiafoe has done so while defeating some tough customers in Learner Tien, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Lorenzo Musetti, all players ranked inside the top 15.
Despite Tiafoe’s lopsided head-to-head advantage, it’s Nakashima who’s the slight favorite following his stellar August. Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings lean this way, too, as Nakashima is showing a 51.9% chance of defeating Tiafoe.
With both players showing good form and toppling some of the tour’s top players, this one could go either way. However, Nakashima has sustained a high level throughout the month, potentially positioning him to turn the tables on what’s so far been a one-sided rivalry.

Nakashima vs. Tiafoe Pick – 25.5 Total Games
Nakashima’s last three matches have all gone three sets, totaling 33, 31, and 32 games.

Despite the lopsided head-to-head, three of the six hard-court matches these two have played have gone three sets.
Among the top 50 players, Tiafoe has played the fourth-most tiebreaks (30) this season, while Nakashima has played the eighth-most (27). Nakashima has also logged the second-most tiebreaks on hard courts (16).
