White Sox vs. Cubs Prediction, Winner Payout, Over/Under – Wednesday, August 19

The White Sox will start RP Sean Newcomb (3.79 xFIP in 68.0 IP, 46 appearances, 2 starts) in the Wednesday matinee. Newcomb will serve as the opener as the White Sox use their bullpen throughout the matchup.

The White Sox have been one of the most unlikely stories. They entered 2026 after three consecutive seasons with 100 or more losses, including a 41-121 record in 2024 — the worst this century. This year, however, they're in playoff contention and currently hold a 4.5-game lead in the American League Central.

The biggest factor in this turnaround is that they've found their power. Last year, they ranked 24th in xSLG (.393), while this year they rank 11th (.401). One of their major additions this season is 1B Munetaka Murakami. The slugger from Japan is leading the league in hard-hit rate (60.3%).

The Cubs will counter with Clay Holmes (3.78 xFIP in 63.1 IP, 11 starts) in the series finale. Holmes was a trade deadline addition to bolster a starting rotation that has dealt with injuries. His Cubs debut was his first start since May, after he suffered a fractured right fibula when he was hit by a line drive.

That start didn’t go well, as he allowed 4 earned runs over 4 innings against the Royals. His next start was much better, seeing him go 6.2 scoreless innings against the Cardinals. Holmes could become an important piece as the Cubs make an October run, with manager Craig Counsell announcing that they are going to stick with a five-man rotation for now.

The Cubs have had a roller-coaster season. They had a fantastic start, going 27-12, and held a 3.5-game lead in the NL Central. They then hit a rough patch, losing 22 of 29 and falling to eight games out of the division. Since then, they've gone an NL-best 39-19, which has helped them climb back into the NL Central race and put them only 4.5 games behind the Brewers.

Chicago hopes to get some of its key players back before the end of the season, including SS Dansby Swanson, SP Kevin Gausman, and SP Edward Cabrera.

The team could also have SP Justin Steele and SP Ben Brown, who have not pitched this season, ready for the playoffs. Each is starting to begin throwing programs.
