Washington vs. #18 USC Prediction, Spread, Over/Under – Saturday, October 3

Both Washington and USC come into Saturday’s contest having lost last weekend, making this a critical game for both programs as they desperately seek to avoid an early second defeat in conference play.

Washington rarely loses at home under Jedd Fisch, which made the 27-24 loss to Minnesota somewhat surprising. The Huskies trailed 24-10 heading into the final quarter, but a valiant comeback fell just short in a game where they lost the turnover battle and gained just 1.5 yards per carry.

USC’s 41-27 loss to Oregon saw the Trojans surrender more than 500 yards of total offense and was marred by an ugly hit on QB Dante Moore. Backup Dylan Raiola came in and torched the Trojans, throwing for 289 yards and a pair of TDs.

USC is led offensively by QB Jayden Maiava, who has already racked up 1,499 yards — second in college football — and 14 TDs in five games. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his play is how well he’s taken care of the ball, with just 2 picks and 2 turnover-worthy throws this year, per PFF.

He’s had to put up big numbers to keep pace with his defense. PFF ranks USC’s secondary as the 23rd-worst in terms of coverage grade and ranks the defense as a whole 121st in tackling.

The Huskies will lean on WR Dezmen Roebuck to continue making plays for them against that porous defense. He leads the Big Ten with 235 yards after the catch, accounting for more than 75% of his receiving yards on the season.

QB Demond Williams Jr. is third among qualified Big Ten starters in adjusted completion percentage, but he could be in for a rough day against USC’s elite pass rush. He’s already had to scramble 23 times this season, a number topped by only three other QBs nationally, with 9 sacks as well.

PFF puts Washington as the 11th-best run defense, which should worry the Trojans. Oregon is rated just behind the Huskies and held USC RBs King Miller and Waymond Jordan to just 115 yards on 22 carries — 27 of which came on one big gain in the second quarter.

Washington vs. USC Prediction on Spread – 10/3/26

Both teams have clear strengths and weaknesses that complement each other quite well, making this an intriguing matchup. Game On Paper has USC’s defense ranked in the 25th percentile or worse in 12 of their 16 key metrics, while Washington’s offense ranks above the 50th percentile in just five.

The other side of the ball is where things get quite interesting. USC’s offense has been producing at an elite level, sitting top five in offensive success rate, passing success rate, and offensive net adjusted EPA/play. The Trojans are second in available yards earned and third in net EPA/drive.

Where they’re struggling is finishing drives. Against Oregon, USC got inside the 25-yard line on five different occasions and came away with just 20 points.

While that might seem fine, it’s concerning given the Ducks defense ranks 99th in available yards allowed, 122nd in early downs EPA, and 124th in average third-down distance. Getting third down stops at a 64.1% clip (21st) was what helped them limit USC’s output.

The Huskies' defense ranks fourth in that metric, getting off the field on 72.5% of opportunities. They also are fifth in defensive net EPA/play and feature one of the best front sevens in the nation.

The question for those looking to back the Huskies against the spread is whether their success defensively was due to a favorable early schedule with four games at home or whether they can stop this Trojan offense.

In the end, if Washington is to cover, it’s USC’s defensive deficiencies that will be the difference. The Huskies thrive on big plays, boasting an explosive run rate in the 84th percentile and the game-breaking post-catch abilities of Roebuck leading to big pass plays.

The Trojans reside in the bottom percentile in explosive pass play rate with a defense that CFB Stats has 132nd with 18 pass plays allowed of 20+ yards.

Even if USC racks up lots of yardage, that porous secondary and an inability to finish series create a perfect recipe for Washington to potentially keep things close if the Huskies take care of the football.
