SMU has been one of the more consistent programs in the ACC the past few years. The Mustangs have recorded seven consecutive bowl appearances, including a College Football Playoff berth in 2024.

The 2026 campaign got off to an impressive start for SMU, with the only loss coming against then #23 Louisville in its first seven games. However, SMU was engaged in a back-and-forth affair with Syracuse last week, and ultimately saw the Orange put together a game-winning drive in the final minute.

The Mustangs outgained the Orange 421-338 in the yardage department but were one-dimensional throughout the contest. SMU was limited to just 69 total rushing yards on 2.2 yards per carry, which forced QB Kevin Jennings to do the bulk of the heavy lifting.

Speaking of Jennings, the star signal-caller has been the straw that stirs the drink for the Mustangs this season. Jennings has completed 73.7% of his passes for 2,414 yards and 21 TDs with just 5 INTs. The senior QB has tossed 2+ TDs in all but one game this season.

Defensively, SMU has been very stout for the most part. The Mustangs have allowed 20 or fewer points in three of their last four games and 121 or fewer rushing yards in three of those contests.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech is embarking on a new era with former Penn State head coach James Franklin at the helm. Franklin’s early tenure in Blacksburg has been successful, with a few impressive victories.

After dropping back-to-back games to Pittsburgh and California last month, Virginia Tech has rebounded with consecutive wins against Georgia Tech and Clemson. Despite a quiet offensive day, the Hokies held the Tigers to just 153 yards through the air in a 20-16 win.

When Franklin took the Virginia Tech job, he lured former Penn State QB Ethan Grunkemeyer to the Hokies. Grunkemeyer has really thrived in his first season in Blacksburg, completing 71.4% of his passes for 2,140 yards and 17 TDs with only 2 INTs. In fact, Grunkemeyer has recorded a 0.12 EPA per dropback this season, ranking 58th among collegiate QBs, per Game on Paper.

The Hokies rely heavily on the passing game, racking up the third-most passing yards per game in the ACC (284.4) this season.
