World No. 20 Frances Tiafoe is coming off a disappointing showing at the Mubadala DC Open, where he lost his opening match to then-world No. 56 Terence Atmane in three sets. Given that Tiafoe grew up nearby and Washington is effectively his home tournament, the early exit had to sting even more.
As a seeded player at ATP Montreal, the American received a first-round bye, so this will be his first match since that defeat.
His opponent, Marin Cilic, will be 38 years old in September and hasn’t finished a season with a winning record since 2022. Now ranked No. 85, Cilic’s first-round victory over qualifier Sho Shimabukuro broke a three-match losing streak.
The Croatian has struggled against top-shelf competition this season, going 0-6 versus top-20 opponents (0-3 on hard courts).
While he leads the head-to-head 2-0 vs. Tiafoe, the two haven't met since 2018, and Cilic was still a top-10 player back then.

Amanda Anisimova reached two major finals in 2025, including the US Open, so we know her ceiling is super high when she’s at her best.
However, a wrist injury caused her to miss most of the spring clay season, and this will be just her fourth tournament since returning for the French Open in late May. She’s gone 5-3 over this stretch, though her two most recent losses have come against top-30 opponents (Iva Jovic and Madison Keys).
This is the American’s first hard-court match of the summer following a first-round bye.
While it’s difficult to pinpoint where Anisimova’s form is coming into WTA Toronto, she’s up against a rather inexperienced opponent in world No. 79 Lanlana Tararudee.
Tararudee comes into this match after defeating Qinwen Zheng in qualifying and Emerson Jones in the first round. While both victories came in straight sets, neither opponent is currently ranked inside the top 100.
The 22-year-old has racked up quite a few wins across all levels this season, which includes winning WTA 125 titles in Istanbul and Austin. However, she’s played just eight tour-level matches all season, going 4-4 across them.
This will be only the second time she’s faced a top-20 opponent, and she’s never played someone ranked inside the top 10.
Despite questions surrounding Anisimova’s level, she presents a massive step up in competition for Tararudee. Per Tennis Abstract, the American has a 67.7% win probability tonight.
