Rockies vs. Nationals, Winner Payout, Over/Under – Thursday, August 27

The good news for the Rockies is that they already have 9 more wins this season than last. The bad news is that they're still 52-81 and may finish with the league's worst record. Solace can be found in the fact that this year has uncovered legitimate foundational pieces in C Hunter Goodman, OF Cole Carrigg, and 1B T.J. Rumfield.

Colorado will be sending rookie RHP Gabriel Hughes (4.30 xFIP) to the mound. Hughes displayed impressive strikeout stuff in the minor leagues this year, pitching to the tune of an 11.19 K/9, but that hasn't translated to the majors; his 7.38 K/9 and 7.4% swinging strike rate are both below average.

He's not only pitching for a spot in the rotation next year but also likely a spot on the big-league club.

What was once a promising season for the Nationals was quickly derailed by a lack of pitching in both the starting rotation and the bullpen, as well as injuries to key pieces, including star OF James Wood.

They're 62-73, but this is a team that (when healthy) is incredibly dangerous offensively. Much like their opponents today, they'll have to shore up their pitching next season to be a legitimate threat.

Washington will have veteran RHP Jake Irvin (4.64 xFIP) toe the rubber. Irvin has been a consistent presence, combining to throw 367.2 innings the last two seasons. At best, he's probably a No. 5 on a playoff team, with his biggest bugaboo being his propensity to give up the long ball (career HR/9 of 1.61).

Rockies 1B T.J. Rumfield vs. Nationals: 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBI
