Rays vs. Braves, Winner Payout, Over/Under – Tuesday, September 8

The Rays are 85-58 and have basically been in cruise control in the AL East for most of the season. Things have started to get a bit dicey, though, as the New York Yankees have trimmed the lead to just 4.0 games and are welcoming back superstar OF Aaron Judge later tonight.

Tampa Bay will trot out trade-deadline acquisition RHP Freddy Peralta (4.29 xFIP) tonight in the A. Peralta has had a rocky season but has begun to piece things together over his last two starts.

The Rays have been working on getting Peralta more extension and getting him to move down the mound quicker, and the results have paid dividends; he threw 12 innings with 1 run allowed and 11 strikeouts over his last two starts.

The Braves ran into a buzzsaw last night in LHP Jesus Luzardo, who shut them down in a 1-0 Phillies win. That loss cut the Braves' division lead to just 4.0 games, and with three games remaining against Philly this season, Atlanta will have to keep playing great baseball to stave off a late-season charge from its division rivals.

RHP AJ Smith-Shawver (5.23 xFIP) will toe the rubber tonight. It’s been a rough season for Smith-Shawver, who has only pitched 17.2 innings and has gotten whacked to the tune of a 7.13 ERA.

Perhaps the silver lining is that his xERA (4.33) sits almost 3 full runs below his actual ERA, so there could be some positive regression incoming.

Rays vs. Braves Prediction on the Over/Under – 9/8/26

Here are the key game stats and trends behind our Rays vs. Braves prediction on the over/under for Tuesday, September 8.

Unless otherwise noted, data used in this article is from Baseball Savant or FanGraphs.

  • It’s tough to pick a winner in a game between two evenly matched teams, but there are reasons to believe that we may see quite a few runs tonight.
  • Peralta’s home run rates against this powerful Atlanta lineup draw obvious concern. Peralta has given up 1.98 HR/9 on the road compared to just 0.92 HR/9 at home.
  • On the flip side, Smith-Shawver has been awful this season. He has a monstrous 5.6 BB/9 and an unimpressive 7.64 K/9.
  • Against a patient Rays offense that strikes out at the lowest rate in the majors (18.4%), there could be a ton of baserunners all night for Tampa.
  • Additionally, neither bullpen has been good recently. In the last two weeks, the Braves' bullpen ranks 15th in xFIP (4.20), while the Rays are 22nd with a 4.55 xFIP.

Here are the top Rays vs. Braves picks to target on PrizePicks for Tuesday, September 8. Today’s MLB picks for PrizePicks include Freddy Peralta vs. Drake Baldwin.

Rays SP Freddy Peralta vs. Braves: 4.5 Hits Allowed

  • As mentioned, Peralta has been terrible on the road this year. His road ERA is 6.19 — over 2 runs worse than his home ERA of 3.89.
  • He has given up 79 hits in 68 innings on the road, pitching at least six innings in four of his last five starts. At that rate, the Braves are projected to get between 6 and 7 hits off the Rays righty.
  • The Braves offense has been much better at home this season, where they are hitting .259, compared to .236 on the road.
  • Atlanta has racked up the ninth-most hits in baseball (617) at home but is 20th in hits on the road (585).

Braves C Drake Baldwin vs. Rays: 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBI

  • One of the Braves' bats garnering attention is C Drake Baldwin, who owns an impressive 139 wRC+ against RHP this season.
  • Additionally, he has been much better at home with a 140 wRC+ in Atlanta, compared to a 103 wRC+ on the road.
  • Baldwin has been swinging a much better bat in the second half of the season. He sports a 129 wRC+ and a .307 average in the second half compared to a 117 wRC+ and .254 average in the first half.
  • Freddy Peralta is nicknamed "Fastball Freddie" because he is known for throwing two different types of fastballs, including high usage rates. Baldwin has tattooed the fastball to the tune of a 1.04 wFA/C this year.
