The Buckeyes’ offense continued to roll in a 42-19 win vs. Illinois last week, but their defense had perhaps the worst performance of the young season. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes celebrated a last-second, 20-19 win over Michigan, led by a 16-yard receiving TD from WR Reece Vander Zee as time expired.

#5 Ohio State vs. #14 Iowa Prediction, Spread, Over/Under for Saturday, October 3
Since a heartbreaking 24-23 loss vs. #1 Texas, Ohio State posted a 59-3 win over Kent State in Week 3, followed by a 41-19 victory over Illinois last week. While the result vs. Kent State was thorough, Buckeye fans are getting a little nervous after Week 4’s iffy product.
It was business as usual for the offense, racking up 518 yards and 10.2 yards per passing attempt. OSU WR Jeremiah Smith tallied career highs with 12 catches for 217 receiving yards and 4 receiving TDs, officially putting himself in the driver’s seat with the shortest payout to win the Heisman Trophy (3.57x) on PrizePicks. Even the run game that’s been in question totaled 151 yards and 4.7 yards per rushing attempt.
The same positivity was not surrounding the defense — which yielded 462 total yards. That was the most Ohio State has allowed in any game since giving up 496 yards in a 32-31 loss on the road vs. Oregon in 2024. The difference? Illinois isn’t viewed as one of the nation’s best.
The Fighting Illini’s 6.9 yards per passing attempt was concerning, but Illinois’ 199 rushing yards and 6.0 yards per carry set off the alarms. The defensive line continues to struggle, whether it’s stuffing the run or generating a consistent pass rush.
OSU has its chance to immediately calm questions, as Iowa totals 4.8 yards per carry (78th percentile). The Hawkeyes aren’t coming off their best performance either, being outgained 429-285 in yardage vs. Michigan. But in the end, WR Reece Vander Zee provided late-game heroics to secure the win.
Iowa logged only 6.5 yards per passing attempt and 2.4 yards per rushing attempt. The pass defense especially struggled, giving up 276 passing yards and 9.9 yards per passing attempt to a Michigan team that has a 52.5% pass success rate (84th percentile), per Game on Paper.
Up next? An Ohio State offense with a 60.9% pass success rate (third nationally) that’s led by the Heisman favorite, Jeremiah Smith.
On the injury report, the Buckeyes will be without starting RT Phillip Daniels while CB Jay Timmons is questionable. Iowa starting S Tyler Brown is also out for Saturday’s game.

Ohio State vs. Iowa Prediction on Over/Under – 10/3/26
As previewed, Iowa’s pass defense is a major concern for this matchup. Ohio State’s offense was buzzing with 367 passing yards, and while Jeremiah Smith won the day with 217 receiving yards, true freshmen WRs Brock Boyd (22 snaps) and Chris Henry Jr. (25 snaps) each got meaningful snaps, suggesting this receiving corps could become more well-rounded as the season progresses.
Iowa may lack the pass rush to get home, too, as Ohio State gives up just an 11.1% havoc rate (83rd percentile). The Hawkeyes produce a 17.3% havoc rate (59th percentile).
When kept clean in the pocket, Buckeyes QB Julian Sayin has 11.0 yards per passing attempt, an 81.5% adjusted completion percentage, 9 passing TDs, and 0 turnover-worthy plays. If Sayin enjoys a comfy pocket, good luck to Iowa.
However, the Buckeyes could become reliant on dropping back considering their 42.6% rush success rate (44th percentile). The Hawkeyes are allowing -0.28 EPA per rushing attempt (99th percentile) and a 33.0% rush success rate (95th percentile).
This is where the home team’s potential strategy comes into play: win the run game, control the clock, and limit Ohio State’s offensive possessions.
As mentioned, the Buckeyes gave up 199 rushing yards and 6.0 yards per carry vs. Illinois. Additionally, neither team is playing at a blistering pace, with Iowa’s 27.0 seconds per play (42nd percentile) and OSU’s 26.3 (56th percentile), per TeamRankings.
The Hawkeyes could lack the firepower to keep up with -0.09 adjusted EPA per play (29th percentile) on offense. Plus, Ohio State’s defense is still serviceable thanks to -0.25 adjusted EPA per play allowed (95th percentile). Between Iowa’s weak offense and its potential tactic to bleed as much clock as possible, few points could be ahead.

Iowa RB Kamari Moulton vs. Ohio State: 53.5 Rush Yards
- As mentioned, Iowa could look to burn clock and play slow in this game, and that pairs well with feeding Kamari Moulton.
- The Hawkeyes’ RB1 is averaging 94.7 rushing yards per game over three appearances, though much of that is carried by 183 yards in Week 1.
- Moulton still features some impressive efficiency, such as 4.59 yards after contact per carry. Last week, Illinois RBs Aidan Laughery (31) and Ca’Lil Valentine (37) combined for 68 yards after contact vs. Ohio State. That included 3.70 yards after contact per carry via Valentine.
- The Buckeyes are yielding 1.2 second-level rushing yards per carry (17th percentile), and Moulton has 7 carries of 10+ yards this season.
- Anchored by 13.0 rushing attempts per game for Moulton, Iowa has a running back it can lean on.
