#3 Notre Dame vs. North Carolina Prediction, Spread, Over/Under – Saturday, October 3

Notre Dame has looked like one of the most complete teams in the country through the first month of the season, ranking near the top nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency.

According to College Football Ratings, the Fighting Irish rank third nationally in overall team rating, seventh in adjusted offensive rating, and second in adjusted defensive rating. They average 42.3 points per game while allowing just 8.3, the second-best scoring defense in the FBS.

The advanced numbers, according to Game on Paper, are even more impressive. Notre Dame ranks first nationally in adjusted EPA per play (+0.49) and second in net EPA per play (+0.50).

The Irish also rank second nationally in yards-per-play margin, available-yards percentage, and overall success-rate margin. Their offense is producing a 54.7% success rate, while the defense is holding opponents to just 36.8%.

QB CJ Carr has been a huge reason for that success. Through four games, Carr has completed 67 of 94 passes for 963 yards, 9 passing TDs, and one INT.

North Carolina has been much more middle-of-the-pack statistically, but the good news is it had two full weeks to prepare for this matchup.

The Tar Heels rank 62nd nationally in College Football Ratings' overall rating, with an 88th-ranked adjusted offense and 47th-ranked adjusted defense.

UNC is scoring only 23.3 points per game, and the bulk of that came against ETSU. Against NC State and TCU, the Tar Heels averaged just 15.0 points per game.

The offense has been particularly inconsistent through the air. QB Billy Edwards Jr. has completed 44 of 78 passes for 611 yards, 3 TDs, and one INT, with just a 56.4% completion rate.

We will get more into Edwards’ specific profile in the player picks section, but it is a difficult matchup vs. a Notre Dame defense that ranks fourth nationally in adjusted defensive EPA per play and holds opponents to only 34.2% overall success.

Notre Dame vs. North Carolina Prediction on Spread – 10/3/26

Here are the key stats and predictions behind our Notre Dame vs. North Carolina spread prediction for Saturday, October 3.

Unless otherwise noted, data used in this article is from College Football Ratings, PFF, or Game on Paper.

  • The Fighting Irish are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents 169-33 through four games. They are 3-1-0 (75%) against the spread (ATS) this season.
  • Notre Dame ranks first nationally in adjusted EPA per play (+0.49) and second in net EPA per play (+0.50). North Carolina ranks 75th and 78th in those two categories.
  • The Irish offense ranks 13th nationally in EPA per play (+0.333) and 13th in offensive success rate (51.5%). UNC's offense ranks 86th in EPA/play (+0.118).
  • Notre Dame's defense has been even better. The Irish rank fourth nationally in adjusted EPA per play allowed (-0.093) and 15th in net EPA/play allowed (-0.119). Opponents have managed only a 34.2% success rate against ND.
  • North Carolina's biggest issue is it's a run-first offense, ranking eighth nationally in rush success rate (53.2%), but Notre Dame has the defensive profile to directly take away that strength, holding opponents to just a 35.8% rush success rate.
  • The Irish allow only 1.7 yards per rush, ranking third nationally, while their -0.229 EPA per rushing attempt sits eighth.
  • UNC's defense is respectable overall, ranking 41st nationally in EPA/play allowed (-0.019), but its 39.3% defensive success rate ranks only 69th. That could be problematic against a Notre Dame offense that consistently stays ahead of the chains.
  • You can see that “ahead of the chains” mentality in the ND offense with a 5.45-yard average third-down distance (fourth-best).
  • UNC, for comparison, ranks 118th in average third-down distance at 6.20 yards. That could be catastrophic against this fearsome ND pass rush.

Notre Dame vs. North Carolina Picks, Player Stats for PrizePicks – 10/3/26

Here are the top Notre Dame vs. North Carolina picks to target on PrizePicks for Saturday's ACC matchup. Today's CFB picks for PrizePicks include CJ Carr and Billy Edwards Jr.

Notre Dame QB CJ Carr vs. North Carolina: 241.5 Pass Yards

  • UNC has operated as a run funnel so far this season. Defensively, it ranks 23rd in EPA/pass (-0.12) but 77th in EPA/rush (0.05).
  • This could make the run game the path of least resistance for the Notre Dame offense, reducing Carr’s overall passing volume.
  • UNC's defense has also been good at preventing explosive plays, ranking eighth nationally in explosiveness allowed. It may be tough for him to clear this projection by relying solely on methodical drives rather than explosive plays.
  • With Notre Dame installed as a 21.5-point favorite, it will likely have a sizable second-half lead and therefore can lean more on the run to see the game out.
  • Carr has only cleared this projection in one of his four games this season.
  • He hasn't thrown the ball 30+ times in a single game this season thanks to a dominant defense and run game.

North Carolina QB Billy Edwards Jr. vs. Notre Dame: 155.5 Pass Yards

  • Against FBS competition, Edwards has completed only 29 of 57 passes for 367 yards, paired with 5.34 yards per dropback, -0.10 EPA/dropback, and a 42.0% passing success rate.
  • Notre Dame has been excellent against the pass, allowing only 6.0 yards per pass attempt (80th percentile).
  • The Fighting Irish defense is fourth nationally in EPA/pass (-0.30). North Carolina's offense, meanwhile, ranks 107th nationally in EPA/pass at -0.10. That is arguably the biggest statistical mismatch of this entire game.
  • North Carolina also plays at a relatively slow pace, averaging only 60.7 plays per game, which ranks 125th nationally. That creates fewer total opportunities for Edwards to accumulate passing yards.
  • The Tar Heels have leaned heavily on the run with a 48.4% rush-play rate, which gives North Carolina real incentive to keep the ball on the ground against an Irish defense that has been difficult to throw against.
  • Edwards can create with his legs, too. He is averaging 6.14 yards per rush with a +0.56 EPA/rush and an 86.0% rushing success rate. That could also work against his pass-yardage projection.
  • Edwards had just 135 passing yards on 30 attempts against Clemson, including only 52 passing yards after halftime. He'll now face a Notre Dame defense that ranks second nationally in adjusted defensive EPA.
Add Billy Edwards Jr. to your PrizePicks lineup now.
