The Fourth of July arriving signals that the 2026 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is set to take place at Coney Island.
The Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest began in 1967 when Walter Paul won the inaugural contest by eating 17 hot dogs during the hour-long competition. The annual circuit rose to true prominence in the early 2000s when Takeru Kobayashi won six consecutive Mustard Belts, before Joey Chestnut began his ascent in the sport.
How has history shaped the contest everyone enjoys today? Below, we’ll break down the previous winners and key results from the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in recent years.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Past Winners, Results
Chestnut has won the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 17 times since making his debut in 2006. Meanwhile, the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest began holding a women’s competition in 2011, and Miki Sudo has won the women’s contest in 10 of the past 11 years.
Chestnut didn’t compete in 2024 due to a dispute with Major League Eating. He was banned from participating in the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest after he accepted an endorsement deal with Impossible Foods, a Nathan’s competitor.
MLE informed Chestnut that a rule change regarding sponsors was the reason for the ban. However, Chestnut opted not to compete in the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Instead, he attended a Fort Bliss “Pop Goes the Fort” event, where he competed in a 4-vs-1 eating competition and ate 57 hot dogs in 10 minutes.
After a one-year hiatus, Chestnut returned to the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2025. Let's take a closer look at the history of the contest this century.
