As is usually the case, Taylor Fritz performed well during the grass swing ahead of coming to Washington, winning 11 of his 14 matches. In addition to being a Wimbledon quarterfinalist, Fritz finished runner-up at both Stuttgart and Halle.

Here in Washington, Fritz didn’t have much trouble working through the first two rounds. However, he narrowly escaped an upset bid by Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals. Not only did Fritz require a medical timeout to deal with a knee issue, but he also had to save match point before prevailing 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6).

While Fritz downplayed the injury, knee tendinitis has been an ongoing problem for him in 2026, causing him to miss time in the spring and factoring into his quarterfinal loss at Wimbledon.

If Fritz is affected at all, it could open the door for Brandon Nakashima, who’s enjoyed a strong tournament. 

Over the past two rounds, Nakashima has earned top-20 wins against Jakub Mensik and Alex de Minaur after coming in with a 1-4 record versus top-20 players this season. 

That being said, Nakashima may have to overcome a mental hurdle against his fellow American, as Fritz leads their head-to-head 3-1. 

Further, Nakashima is just 4-20 versus top-10 players in his career, and while two of those wins have come over the last two months, both came against the same player (De Minaur).

According to Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, Fritz ranks 20th on hard courts, whereas Nakashima is 37th.

Although Fritz’s injury scare is a slight concern, the respective track records of both players suggest that he’s a deserving favorite.
