Iga Swiatek dominated Sara Bejlek and Viktorija Golubic — two players ranked outside the top 30 — in her first two Toronto matches, but she’s likely to face a much tougher challenge from world No. 11 Marta Kostyuk in the round of 16.

Kostyuk has enjoyed easily the best season of her career, and she’s now won 23 of her last 25 matches across all three surfaces. Her only losses have come to Mirra Andreeva at the French Open and Linda Noskova at Wimbledon. Both players went on to win those respective Grand Slams.

The Ukrainian is coming off a 6-3, 6-1 victory over world No. 19 Madison Keys, so her form on hard courts specifically shouldn’t be in question, either.

Meanwhile, Swiatek is having a modest season by her lofty standards, failing to reach a singles final in 2026 and dropping to No. 8 in the world after a third-round exit at Wimbledon. She has only three wins vs. top-20 opponents all year.

While Swiatek leads the head-to-head 3-1, Kostyuk’s straight-sets win over her at this year’s French Open could tip the scales in the Ukrainian’s favor, particularly since the previous three matches all came over two years ago.

Tennis Abstract projects a 56.7% win probability for Swiatek over Kostyuk. However, there’s enough evidence to suggest the underdog may have a good shot in this match.
