While Joao Fonseca achieved his first-ever major quarterfinal at this year’s French Open, he’s otherwise had a difficult time finding consistency in 2026, failing to reach a semifinal at any event.

With that in mind, this run to the round of 16 in Montreal has been a positive sign for the young Brazilian. Over the past two rounds, Fonseca has earned straight-set victories against a pair of former top-10 players, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(3), 7-5, and Casper Ruud 7-6(6), 6-3.    

Although Tsitsipas’ ranking has taken a sizable hit this season, he was coming off a title win in Gstaad just a few weeks ago and had won seven of his last eight matches. Ruud is the world No. 14 but has now lost to Fonseca twice in 2026.

Ben Shelton won the Canadian Open in 2025, which remains the most prestigious title of his career. He’s had a bit of an up-and-down campaign himself, suffering early exits at both the French Open and Wimbledon while also winning titles across all three surfaces (Dallas, Munich, and Stuttgart). 

Shelton hasn’t been too troubled through his first two matches here, defeating both Jenson Brooksby and Zizou Bergs in straight sets, with the latter match barely lasting over an hour.
