As Travis Hunter enters the NFL as one of the most prolific two-way college football players of all-time, all eyes are on how many snaps the Heisman Trophy winner will play on each side of the ball.
Recent comments from the Jaguars coach Liam Coen during training camp offer a clue into his possible role on offense and defense, giving insight into Hunter’s rookie season outlook and 2025 fantasy football value.
Coen: Travis Hunter to play 80% Offensive Snaps
On Monday, Coen gave some insight into Hunter’s playing time on the offense on the The Rich Eisen Show, saying he could play 80% of the snaps on offense.
“If you’re saying, [we’re] going to play 65-75 snaps on offense, and [Hunter’s] playing 80% of those snaps or so…” Coen said. “Defensively, you look at, trying to be able to match that number as much as possible.”
Although Hunter was listed as a starting WR and a second-string cornerback in the team’s first depth chart, the 80% expectation for offensive snaps is higher than was expected coming into training camp.
However, it does solidify his spot as one of the top NFL rookies to draft for fantasy football this year.
As Hunter continues to get up to speed and get comfortable in an NFL offense, it looks like he’ll play a majority of snaps for the Jaguars.
“Offensively, we felt like there was a little bit more development that was necessary and it’s a lot more ball, right? Just a lot more scheme and words and calls,” Coen said. “Every single day is packed — from the moment he arrives to the moment he leaves — with making sure that he is meeting with somebody at all times.”
Notably, Jaguars 2024 rookie WR Brian Thomas Jr. played on 79.5% of snaps in a breakout rookie season, per Lineups. Thomas finished with 87 receptions (T-16th), 1,282 yards (3rd), and 10 touchdowns (T-6th), putting him amongst the NFL’s best without playing close to every snap.
