Although Taylor Fritz is still without a title this season, he’s coming off a grass swing where he went 11-3, and two of his recent finals appearances came during that stretch (Stuttgart and Halle). 

He has won at least two titles in each of the past four seasons, so it might only be a matter of time before he crosses the finish line.

Here in Washington, Fritz cruised through the opening two rounds before facing adversity in the quarterfinals and semifinals, needing three sets to get past fellow Americans Alex Michelsen and Brandon Nakashima.

The quarterfinal against Michelsen proved particularly troublesome for Fritz, as an ongoing knee issue flared up, and he had to save a match point to survive. While the knee didn’t seem to affect him in the semifinals versus Nakashima, he’s been dealing with tendinitis throughout the season, and it notably contributed to his quarterfinal loss at Wimbledon.

Rafael Jodar’s season really took off on clay this spring, as he went 19-4 while making deep runs at five different tournaments. In addition to his French Open quarterfinal appearance and Marrakech title, Jodar reached the quarters or better in Barcelona, Madrid, and Rome.

While the teenager didn’t make much noise at Wimbledon, falling in the third round, he’s quickly found his form on these Washington hard courts, earning top-30 victories over Arthur Fils, Lorenzo Musetti, and Alejandro Tabilo.

That being said, Jodar came into Washington with just a 5-6 record on hard courts this season, while Fritz entered at 12-8 and boasts a career winning percentage of 61.6% on the surface.

Fritz won their only meeting earlier this season, too, a straight-sets win at Delray in February.

Still, Jodar’s clay breakout came after that match, and his form can’t be denied. In fact, according to Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, Jodar is actually showing a 51.8% win probability despite being the underdog.

Considering Fritz's hard-court pedigree and big-match experience, he deserves to be the favorite. However, his lingering knee issue may limit his ceiling, and Jodar's recent form could give him a legitimate chance to pull off the upset.
