The Seminoles knocked off the Tide to open last season, and Alabama would love nothing more than to return the favor. In doing so, it could lead to a regime change in Tallahassee, as Mike Norvell’s coaching seat seems to be at inferno levels of heat.

The Norvell era at Florida State may be headed for a messy end, and a blowout loss on Saturday could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported on Friday that the FSU athletic department is considering a reunion with Jimbo Fisher, and the interest is mutual.

FSU’s 3-point loss to SMU did nothing to help matters. The secondary got torched repeatedly as the Seminoles allowed more than 8.7 yards a play, and if not for numerous SMU miscues — including 4 turnovers — that game isn’t close.

Now, Norvell must find a way to navigate a trip to Tuscaloosa against an Alabama team that is hungry for revenge. Last year’s 31-17 defeat in Tallahassee left the Tide with egg on their face as the Seminoles ran the ball down Alabama’s throat.

Kalen DeBoer responded with improvements to the defense in the offseason. It starts on first down, with the Tide ranking 12th in early-down EPA/play, which is how they repeatedly put Kentucky behind in down-and-distance in their 45-17 win last weekend.

Both teams come into the contest ranked in the top 20 in net adjusted EPA/play per Game on Paper, but how they’re getting there is drastically different. The Tide have relied on a defense ranked 29th in net EPA/play, while the Seminoles have used an offense ranked 20th in that same metric.

QB play could be the deciding factor in what should be a hostile environment. Alabama's Keelon Russell hasn’t looked bad, but according to Pro Football Focus, he’s already thrown 3 turnover-worthy passes on just 24 attempts. 

Seminoles QB Ashton Daniels has only one such throw, but he’s also yet to show he can stretch a secondary. Through the first two games, he’s gone just 2-of-8 on throws of 20+ yards and completed less than 50% of his throws beyond 10 yards. 

The biggest question for Florida State is whether having a week off allowed them to make any improvement to a defense that allowed SMU to post a 57% success rate while picking up 11.9 yards per dropback. 

If so, the Seminoles could make a game of this. If not, then we might see some folks ponying up a buyout for Norvell’s contract before Monday morning rolls around.

Florida State’s defense is not good, and that’s putting it kindly. 

It starts up front with a defensive line that ranks in the bottom 1% in line yards. FSU also ranks in the bottom 20% in yards to go on third down, explosive pass rate allowed, and points allowed per quality drive.

In their game with SMU, the Noles ceded an explosive play rate of 10% and failed to get off the third on third down 57% of the time. 

That will be problematic on Saturday if not cleaned up. The Tide rank in the 76th percentile in explosive pass rate and are 36th in EPA/pass. They also rank in the 71st percentile in third down distance to gain.

Florida State’s base metrics look superb offensively, but its 34-17 win over New Mexico State is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Against SMU, the Noles averaged just 4.85 yards per play and 4.73 yards per dropback.

Alabama held Kentucky to 3.22 yards per play a week ago, and the Wildcats had an EPA/rush (-0.37) that ranked in the fourth percentile of all teams.

The Tide defense ranks in the 91st percentile in early-down EPA/play, 83rd percentile in havoc rate, and 81st percentile in EPA/pass. It doesn't allow many explosive pass plays and could cause serious problems for a Florida State offensive line that looked shaky at times against SMU.

The Mustangs hung 430 passing yards on the Seminoles, and Russell just looked like a different player in the second half against Kentucky.
