In Game 3, the Brewers will turn to SP Robert Gasser to start while the Dodgers roll with SP Blake Snell, giving us a lefty-lefty battle to open Wednesday’s festivities.
In the NLDS, Gasser helped close out the series in Game 4, limiting the San Diego Padres to 1 earned run over 4.0 innings with 3 strikeouts. The 27-year-old threw just 56 pitches in that start, though it’s possible Milwaukee gives him a longer leash this time around to preserve the bullpen.
During the regular season, Gasser posted mostly middle-of-the-road numbers over 109.1 innings, amassing a 4.27 xERA (40th percentile), 22.3% strikeout rate (49th percentile), and 7.4% walk rate (67th percentile), per Baseball Savant.
The southpaw did do a good job of suppressing hard contact, though, allowing a 34.0% hard-hit rate (82nd percentile) and 86.5 mph average exit velocity (93rd percentile).
For Snell, this will be just his 11th start all season, as injuries have once again limited his time on the mound. He started Game 2 of the NLDS, and his performance was a mixed bag at best. While Snell held the Atlanta Braves to 1 earned run and logged 5 strikeouts, he lasted just 3.2 innings due to issuing 5 walks.
The good news is he reached 90 pitches, so his workload shouldn't be an issue. He could pitch deeper into the game if he’s less wild on Wednesday.
Snell was effective when healthy over his nine regular-season outings, recording a 2.17 xERA and 31.8% strikeout rate across 42.2 innings. His 9.2% walk rate over those starts was actually a step up from his career average (10.8%), but as his last appearance showed, free passes can still derail him at times.
Although both teams were among the best offenses during the regular season, they’ve had far different results during the playoffs.
In the regular season, Milwaukee ranked third in wRC+ (107) while Los Angeles was second (111). However, during this postseason, the Brewers have led all teams in wRC+ (107) while the Dodgers have the worst mark (67) among the teams still alive.
An intriguing wrinkle in all of this is the struggles of DH Shohei Ohtani, who appears to be playing at less than 100%. He’s slashing .150/.261/.150 with a 29.2% strikeout rate over 24 postseason plate appearances.
The Dodgers were reportedly thinking about benching their star slugger, but he will remain in the lineup for Game 3.
