It's no secret that hard courts are where Naomi Osaka thrives, with all four of her major titles coming on the surface. 

She enters this North American hard-court swing with more momentum than usual, though. Despite typically posting mixed results on clay and grass, she's coming off career-best runs at both the French Open (fourth round) and Wimbledon (quarterfinals).

Overall, Osaka went 15-5 across her two weakest surfaces, with her only losses coming against Aryna Sabalenka (twice), Iga Swiatek and Karolina Muchova (twice) — three of the sport's top players.

Her strong results have lifted her to No. 13 in the rankings, her highest position since returning to the WTA Tour in 2024.

World No. 67 Ashlyn Krueger started this season off slow, but she’s also coming off her best-ever Wimbledon result (fourth round). 

Including a pair of WTA 125 events and Wimbledon qualifying, she went an impressive 16-2 across all levels this grass season. While most of those wins came against lower competition, emerging from qualifying to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon is no small feat. 

On Monday, the 22-year-old looked like she was going to be one-and-done after losing her opening set to Katie Boulter, but she would ultimately emerge with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. 

Getting a come-from-behind win under her belt could give her the confidence to hang in there if she gets down early to Osaka. Krueger also won their only previous meeting in three sets (2024 Cincinnati qualifying).
