Alexander Zverev got off to a sluggish start in the early rounds, grinding through five-setters against Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys, two players ranked outside the top 50. Given he won just two matches between the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open ahead of the US Open, it was a worrying sign that Zverev might not be long for this tournament.

Instead, he’s seemingly righted the ship with straight-set wins in his last two matches, defeating Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-2 and Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(3). 

On paper, this is a favorable quarterfinal matchup for the German, facing an unseeded player who’s put on a lot of mileage over the last two rounds.

Botic van de Zandschulp’s path has been the reverse of Zverev’s, with two straight-set wins followed by a pair of grueling five-setters. 

Early on, Van de Zandschulp produced a statement win in the second round by upsetting world No. 7 Alex de Minaur without dropping a set. However, he boarded a rollercoaster after that, going the distance in wins against Zizou Bergs 3-6, 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-3 and then lucky loser Arthur Gea 3-6, 6-7(0), 7-6 (7), 7-6(3), 6-4.

Over his last two matches, the Dutchman has spent nine hours and 42 minutes on court. Under the circumstances, it’s fair to wonder how much physical and mental energy Van de Zandschulp will have left against his heavily favored opponent. 

Even on a fair playing field, Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings show a wide gap between the two on hard courts, as Zverev rates third while Van de Zandschulp is 53rd. The model projects the German to win 89.0% of the time.

The Dutchman has shown plenty of fight in his run to the quarters, and he could still be a challenge for Zverev, who’s had an up-and-down tournament. However, it may require another marathon for Van de Zandschulp to realistically overcome the world No. 2.
