The 76ers made massive upgrades this past offseason by adding the likes of PF LeBron James and SF Jaylen Brown. With their new influx of talent, the early returns have been sensational.
Philadelphia has the NBA’s best record, and the new group has had no trouble developing chemistry right off the bat. The 76ers have already defeated the New York Knicks twice (including in last Friday’s NBA Cup group-stage clash), and they came back from a 29-point deficit to beat the Cavaliers last month.
Despite adding Brown and James, PG Tyrese Maxey is still the piece that makes the offense tick. He ranks fifth in the league in scoring (28.0 PPG) while recording a 59.4% overall scoring efficiency mark (78th percentile).
James has taken a backseat in scoring and become more of a facilitator with his new team. The Philadelphia star leads the club with 7.4 assists per contest and assists on 19.1 points per 75 possessions (94th percentile).
Philadelphia’s biggest luxury is its nightly scoring depth. While teams often key in on Maxey, James, and C Joel Embiid, that allows the likes of Brown and SG VJ Edgecombe to rise to the occasion at times.
For example, the Pistons held Maxey to 19 points on 5-of-16 shooting on Wednesday, but that allowed Brown to produce a 30-point performance — including 23 first-half points.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers haven’t had the best start in 2026-27 despite reaching the Eastern Conference Finals a season ago. Cleveland has won consecutive games only once and has dropped three of its last four contests.
Aside from a 127-125 overtime win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Cavaliers haven’t beaten anyone of note. Cleveland is fresh off back-to-back losses to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a home-and-home series.
Several of Cleveland’s top stars have had lackluster offensive starts to the new season. SG Donovan Mitchell is averaging just 22.5 PPG after putting up 27.9 PPG a season ago. Meanwhile, PG James Harden is averaging 16.6 PPG on 37.9% shooting from the field while also dishing out only 6.3 APG.
The Cavaliers have also struggled on the defensive end, allowing 117.1 PPG. With an offensively-savvy team like the 76ers on deck, it could be an uphill battle if the Cavs can’t pick things up on that end of the floor.
