The White Sox will reportedly use RP Chris Murphy as an opener tonight, but SP Davis Martin will pitch the bulk of the innings against the Guardians.

Chicago has gotten solid production out of Martin this season, who’s posted a 4.05 ERA across 26 starts and 135.2 innings. However, he’s recorded mixed results in the latter stages of the campaign, and if we check under the hood, most of his underlying metrics leave a lot to be desired.

Per Baseball Savant, the right-hander enters the day with a 4.71 xERA (23rd percentile), 20.1% strikeout rate (33rd percentile), and 44.5% hard-hit rate (seventh percentile). Although he’s limited to both free passes and home runs via a 7.3% walk rate (69th percentile) and 6.5% barrel rate (68th percentile), it’s still an underwhelming overall profile.

SP Foster Griffin will start for Cleveland, and while his numbers don’t necessarily leap off the page, either, he arguably has more positives than his counterpart.

The southpaw has managed a rock-solid 3.65 ERA over 29 starts and 162.2 innings, and he’s been in the 65th percentile or better in ground-ball rate (45.4%), chase rate (32.0%), and average exit velocity (88.0 mph). His 6.4% walk rate has also been borderline elite, reaching the 83rd percentile.

However, Griffin also owns a below-average 4.34 xERA (37th percentile), 21.7% strikeout rate (43rd percentile), and 8.7% barrel rate (27th percentile), so he’s still likely a bit fortunate to have his ERA where it is.

While Cleveland might have the slightly stronger pitcher for much of the contest, that could be offset by Chicago’s potent hitting versus left-handers.

The White Sox platoon a good chunk of their lineup, allowing them to deploy a predominantly right-handed batting order. It’s difficult to argue with the results, as they’ve put up the fifth-best wRC+ (108) and third-best ISO (.178) against southpaws.

Overall, Chicago has scored the seventh-most runs per game (4.68) this year, too.

On the other hand, the Guardians are near the bottom in runs per game (4.09), ranking 27th. They’re 26th in wRC+ (94) for the year and are also below average in their splits versus righties (98).
