The 76ers significantly altered their roster, adding PF LeBron James and SF Jaylen Brown. The early returns of Philadelphia’s revamped team have been impressive, with the only loss coming against the Detroit Pistons.

Philadelphia has already defeated two of the Eastern Conference’s top teams in the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Knicks. The 76ers topped New York 106-100 in a comeback victory in the season opener earlier this month.

In that particular contest, 76ers star PG Tyrese Maxey rose to the occasion with a game-high 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting, also logging 5 assists. Brown scored 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting in his Philadelphia debut, while James added 14 points.

The 76ers struggled from the perimeter, especially in the first half, hitting just 27.5% (11-of-40) of their attempts. Philadelphia did receive a nice lift from reserve G Anfernee Simons (13 points) and wing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (10).

It’s only been five games into the new-look 76ers' tenure, so the team's chemistry is still developing. However, if this group can start knocking down perimeter shots consistently, Philadelphia could be very dangerous late in the season.

Meanwhile, the Knicks haven’t exactly looked like the same group that won an NBA title in June. Despite returning nearly an identical roster, New York has dropped three of its first five games and is averaging just 109.8 PPG (24th in the NBA).

The Knicks lost their first three games to the Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic, and the 76ers. In those contests, New York averaged 101.7 PPG and shot 32.4% (36-of-111) from beyond the arc.

Finals MVP PG Jalen Brunson picked up right where he left off, averaging 25.8 PPG through the first five games. Brunson is coming off his most efficient game of the 2026-27 campaign, scoring 38 points on 13-of-25 shooting and dishing out 7 assists in a 133-127 win against the Chicago Bulls.

One of the Knicks’ only offseason moves was signing veteran C Andre Drummond in free agency after he spent the last two seasons with the 76ers. Drummond played a season-high 24 minutes in the opener and registered 12 points and 14 rebounds in relief of C Karl-Anthony Towns, who was in foul trouble.

The big man battle is one to watch, with C Joel Embiid and Towns bringing out the best in each other in the past.
