Let’s take a look at the latest Devin Booker injury update for tonight's game, plus check out some key stats and PrizePicks picks for the rest of the Suns’ players, including Collin Gillespie.
Devin Booker Injury Update: Is Booker Playing Tonight?
The Suns leading scorer Devin Booker is questionable for Wednesday’s NBA Cup game due to a right groin strain. He will likely be a game-time decision before the 7:30 p.m. ET start from Oklahoma City.
This marks the first time that Phoenix has listed Booker as questionable on the injury report since he initially suffered the groin injury on Dec. 1.
However, Booker did not participate in the media portion of shootaround, when he is typically getting up shots. That's a negative sign for his status on Wednesday night. He looks like
Booker originally suffered the injury during the first quarter against the Lakers on Dec. 1 and wasn’t able to return to that contest. He had 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting and dished out three assists in 10 minutes prior to exiting the game.
The Suns star has gotten off to a strong start this season as he’s put together averages of 25.0 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 22 games, despite being doubled more than 20% of the time by opposing teams.
Target Collin Gillespie If Devin Booker Is Out vs. Thunder?
If Booker isn’t able to return to the court tonight, there is one Sun that could continue to thrive due to his absence.
Suns PG Collin GIllespie is likely to serve as the team’s starting point guard if Booker isn’t able to play. In the two games that Booker has missed, Gillespie has logged 31.0 minutes per contest and is averaging 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
In his most recent game, Gillespie scored 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting, while also grabbing six rebounds and recording four assists. The Villanova product also connected on three of his seven attempts from beyond the arc.
Gillespie also put up 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting on the road vs. the Thunder on November 28. He has shot at least 11 times and played 28+ minutes in each of his last 11 games.
Even in a reserve role for the majority of this season, Gillespie has thrived, averaging 13.6 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.8 rebounds — massive improvements in his third season in the NBA. His previous high in PPG was 5.9 with the Suns last season.
