Canada vs. Morocco Lineups Analysis: Riad Not Starting, Canada’s Wholesale Changes

Morocco CB Chadi Riad had an injury scare in the Round of 32, substituting at the 75th minute in the win vs. the Netherlands. Despite returning to training ahead of this matchup, Riad is a substitute today, while Redouane Halhal earned the starting center-back spot.

For Canada, LB Alphonso Davies continues to take the spotlight. He finally made his World Cup debut and first international appearance since March 2025 in the Round of 32 match vs. South Africa. Davies played only 15 minutes as a substitute.

Another limited role could be ahead, with Davies listed as a sub for today’s Round of 16 clash, keeping Richie Laryea as the starting left-back.

The Canadiens’ notable changes come in the midfield, with Ali Ahmed and Niko Sigur replacing Liam Millar and Nathan Saliba in the starting lineup. Perhaps this is an attempt to change the possession game, with FotMob crediting Morocco with a 61.7% average possession (seventh) compared to Canada’s 56.6% mark (16th).

Additionally, Luc De Fougerolles has replaced Canada CB Derek Cornelius in the starting XI. Canada continues to opt for ST Tani Oluwaseyi over ST Cyle Larin next to Jonathan David in the front line.

Les Rouges will have their work cut out for them, with Morocco conceding only 3.2 expected goals (tied for 10th) in World Cup 2026.
