California vs. Syracuse Prediction, Spread, Over/Under for Week 2

Cal enters Saturday's ACC opener looking to bounce back after suffering a 45-24 home loss to UCLA in Tosh Lupoi's first game as head coach.

The Golden Bears, as expected, showed plenty of offensive promise in the opener, particularly through the air. Sophomore QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (JKS) completed 24 of 41 passes for 271 yards and 2 TDs; however, the bulk of that production (200+ yards) came in the first half. 

JKS suffered an ankle injury before halftime, which may have affected his second-half production, but he finished the game and was not listed on this week's injury report.

The problem was Cal's defense. UCLA ran for 277 yards in the opener, and the Bears struggled to contain the Bruins on the perimeter. Those defensive issues become particularly concerning against a Syracuse offense that rushed for 239 yards in its opener.

The Orange, meanwhile, opened the season by completely overwhelming New Hampshire in a 66-3 victory.

Syracuse gained 514 total yards in the win, including 263 yards from the arm of senior QB Steve Angeli. The Notre Dame transfer completed 20 of 29 passes for 3 TDs and no INTs in his return from the Achilles injury that ended his 2025 season.

Syracuse also received an explosive performance from WR Umari Hatcher, who caught 6 passes for 147 yards and 2 TDs. RB Shavane Anderson Jr. added 102 rushing yards and 3 TDs, giving the Orange plenty of balance heading into their first ACC game.

This will be a much tougher test for both teams but especially the Orange. Cal has the passing-game talent to put pressure on Syracuse's secondary, but the Bears are traveling more than 2,400 miles after a disappointing season opener.

Syracuse, meanwhile, enters the matchup with momentum, a healthy Angeli, and a defensive front that caused a ton of havoc to the tune of 5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss in Week 1.

The Orange lead the all-time series 2-1 after winning the most recent meeting 33-25 in Berkeley in 2024. Saturday marks the first time Syracuse hosts Cal since 1968.

• According to Game On Paper, California posted a -0.02 adjusted EPA/play in 2025, ranking 78th nationally, while Syracuse finished at -0.11 (93rd). Take that with a grain of salt, though, as the Orange's 2025 numbers were dragged down significantly by the loss of Angeli, and the veteran QB's return gives this offense a much higher ceiling.
• The Bears allowed 277 rushing yards to UCLA in Week 1, while Syracuse produced 239 rushing yards against New Hampshire. If the Orange can establish the run, they should be able to control the game flow and keep Cal’s explosive young QB off the field.
• Poor run defense is not new to this Cal team; it ranked 129th nationally in EPA/rush (0.22) in 2025.
• I also have major concerns about the Golden Bears' motivation levels, traveling roughly 2,400 miles for this road game fresh off a devastating home loss. Syracuse holds a significant situational advantage here coming off a 63-point victory inside the JMA Wireless Dome.
• Cal’s OL looked shaky down the stretch against the Bruins, conceding 3 sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss. Poor OL play can struggle even more on the road, and that should be a concern against a Syracuse DL that was able to wreak havoc at will in the opener.

• Syracuse’s secondary was a big issue last season, as it ranked 119th in EPA/pass (0.22) in 2025.
• The biggest concern here is Sagapolutele's ankle. He appeared less effective late against UCLA, but with him not listed on the injury report this week, Cal's concern about its QB seems minimal.
