Astros vs. Padres Prediction, Winner Payout, Over/Under – Saturday, August 8

The Astros will start Peter Lambert (4.35 xFIP in 108.2 IP, 19 starts). His career got off to a rough start with -1.1 WAR and a 6.28 ERA in four seasons with the Rockies before he wound up playing in Japan in 2025. 

Now back in MLB, Lambert is taking advantage of his second chance and having his best season. He’s posting career bests in xERA (3.35), strikeout rate (24.1%), and barrels per plate appearance (4.2).

One potential reason for this improvement is that he’s throwing fewer four-seamers, down from 38.4% of his pitches in 2024 to 30.8% in 2026. He’s relying more on his secondary pitches, including his changeup, with opposing hitters having only a .165 xBA against it. This might also have helped the impact of his four-seamer, as hitters have a .204 xBA against it now (.281 in 2024).

Last season ended the Astros’ eight-year streak of playoff appearances, which included two World Series championships. Most of the players who won those titles are no longer with the team, but a new group is now helping make a new playoff push.

The Astros are atop the American League West, but this is the tightest division in the league, with Houston holding only a 1.5-game lead over the Rangers and a four-game lead over the Mariners.

Regression is an overall theme for the Padres. A few years ago, this team invested in building a contender and has ranked among the top nine in payroll for the past six seasons. Unfortunately, that investment hasn't been successful, with playoff appearances in only four of their last six years and just one trip to the NLCS.

Earlier this year, it looked like the Padres were a real threat in the NL West. On May 18, they were 29-18 and 0.5 games ahead of second place but since then, they are 31-38 (fifth-worst in the NL) and are 9.5 games out of first.
