How Does the 2026 Home Run Derby Work? Format Explained
The MLB Home Run Derby will be undergoing a significant format change in its 2026 installment. Since 2015, the league has used a timer for hitters during the competition, but it will return to a swing-based format for the 2026 Home Run Derby.
Much like in years past, eight sluggers will comprise the Home Run Derby field. However, hitters will no longer be attempting to hit as many home runs as possible during timed rounds.
Instead, they’ll have an assigned number of swings per round: 20 in Round 1, 15 in Round 2, and 15 in the Final Round, with eliminations in each rounds.
Each swing will count towards the player’s total number of swings, whether or not that swing results in a home run. If a player slugs a home run on their final swing of a round, they are permitted to keep swinging until they don’t hit a home run.
Like in 2024 and 2025, all eight hitters will be placed into a single pool in Round 1. The players that hit the top four home run totals in that round will advance to Round 2, where they’ll be seeded based on those opening-round totals (No. 1 vs. No. 4 & No. 2 vs. No. 3).
Any ties in Round 1 will be decided by home run distance: the player who hit the longest home run among the tied competitors will advance. In the ensuing rounds, any ties will be broken via three-swing swing-offs.
Harper is one of just three players to win the Home Run Derby at his home ballpark, doing so at Nationals Park as a member of the Washington Nationals in 2018. The Phillies’ slugger will aim to become the first player in MLB history to accomplish that feat twice.
Meanwhile, Caminero will look for some redemption after finishing as the runner-up to Mariners C Cal Raleigh in the 2025 Home Run Derby.
2026 MLB All-Star Game Time, How to Watch, Lineups
After Monday’s Home Run Derby, we roll into the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday. While the game no longer determines World Series home-field advantage, it’s still an exciting game to see the game’s stars go head-to-head between the American League vs. National League.

For the second consecutive season, the MLB All-Star Game will be held at a National League ballpark, following the 2025 All-Star Game at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves.
It will be the fourth time in MLB history that the Phillies will host the league’s All-Star Game and the first at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia also hosted the Midsummer Classic at Shibe Park (1952) and Veteran Stadium (1976 & 1996).
The American League has dominated the All-Star Game over the last decade with nine consecutive wins from 2013 to 2022 (there was no All-Star Game in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
However, the National League has secured victories in two of the last three All-Star Games, including a 7-6 win in the 2025 All-Star Game. Phillies DH Kyle Schwarber was named the 2025 ASG MVP after he slugged three home runs in the Home Run Derby tiebreaker swing-off, since the game was tied 6-6 after nine innings.
