Now several years removed from their last championship, the Warriors are clearly trying to remain competitive with star PG Stephen Curry but aren’t succeeding in their quest. Head coach Steve Kerr’s team limped to a 37-45 record last season, with Curry missing nearly half the year and F Jimmy Butler sustaining a torn ACL as the final nail in the coffin.
Golden State did sneak into the Play-In as the final seed in the Western Conference, although a narrow win over the Los Angeles Clippers led to a 15-point blowout at the hands of the Phoenix Suns in the second contest.
Now, the dubs are running things back with the core of Curry, Butler (while recovering), F Draymond Green, and G Brandin Podziemski. The franchise would benefit from big man Kristaps Porzingis being more available this time around and the addition of rookie F Yaxel Lendeborg being enough, but Porzingis’ health is already an issue coming into the year.
He also might not even be a Warrior for long:
On the other sideline, the Lakers and head coach JJ Redick won 50+ games for the second consecutive season. The first full year with PG Luka Doncic saw L.A. looking like a force to be reckoned with, but injuries to him and SG Austin Reaves left future Hall of Fame F LeBron James to carry the team to the playoffs.
The rest is history, as James did his best Superman impersonation but he and the organization went their separate ways after nearly a decade together. Now, GM Rob Pelinka has rebuilt the roster around Doncic and Reaves by trading for C Walker Kessler and adding pieces like wing Quentin Grimes, F Ziaire Williams, PF Sandro Mamukelashvili, and more.
Golden State and Los Angeles faced one another four times last season, with the Dubs taking the first game a year ago today but proceeding to drop each of the next three. The Lakers won those matchups by a combined 50 points.
As far as injuries are concerned, Butler is out as expected, in addition to Porzingis (illness). Podziemski (back) is missing this one after playing all 82 regular-season games a year ago; Curry (ankle) is good to go. For Los Angeles, PG Collin Sexton (calf) is questionable.
Warriors vs. Lakers Prediction on Spread – 10/21/26
Here are the key game stats and trends behind our Warriors vs. Lakers pick against the spread for Wednesday, October 21’s NBA game.
- Los Angeles was one of basketball’s best teams at protecting its own court a season ago, posting a 19-9 against-the-spread record as home favorites. As road underdogs, Golden State was just 10-12 ATS.
- There was a significant gap between these squads in 2025-26 when it came to net rating. The Lakers’ mark of +1.9 was 14th, via databallr, whereas the Warriors’ -0.5 figure sat 20th.
- Not many teams created or took advantage of quality looks on offense better than Los Angeles. Per NBA Advanced Stats, the club ranked second in true shooting percentage (61.9%), while Golden State was 11th (58.4%).
- Both clubs were performers in the clutch, but it was the Lakers whose 2.3 plus-minus trailed only the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Dubs checked in at -0.1, good for 14th.
- Redick’s group held foes to the fourth-lowest free throw rate on defense at 23.9%. Kerr’s crew, on the other hand, was a bit worse at 24.6% (ninth).
- The battle of the boards may not be a huge factor in this one. Both clubs sat outside the top 20 in per-game rebounding in 2025, although the Kessler addition figures to assist the Lakers in a big way throughout the season.
