The Philadelphia Phillies acquired Arraez in a trade with the San Francisco Giants that involved multiple prospects heading the other way. It’s a move that helps the Phillies’ lineup in a big way while also allowing the Giants to stockpile some assets in their farm system.

Luis Arraez Traded to Phillies

The Phillies landed Arraez and RP Caleb Kilian from the Giants in exchange for top pitching prospect Ramon Marquez and RP Marty Gair.

Arraez is a three-time batting champion and one of the most disciplined hitters in the majors. The versatile infielder spent time playing at first base with the San Diego Padres during the 2024 and 2025 seasons but returned to second base with the Giants in 2026.

According to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, the Phillies will move 1B Bryce Harper to right field in order to allow Arraez to remain playing second base. Alec Bohm will move over to first base, and Bryson Stott will take Bohm’s spot at third base.

Arraez has produced a .324/.360/.440 slash line while hitting 4 home runs, recording 43 RBI, and scoring 52 runs.

Who Won the Luis Arraez Trade? Grading Swap for Both Sides

The Phillies were nipping at the heels of the Atlanta Braves for the National League East division lead at the All-Star break. However, since the league returned from the Midsummer Classic, Philadelphia has posted just a 5-10 mark and has been one of the league's more lackluster teams.

During that stretch, the Phillies have averaged just 4.4 runs per game and hadn’t won a series until this past weekend’s three-game set against the Baltimore Orioles. As a result, the pressure was on president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski to make a move, and he aggressively acquired Arraez.

Arraez is currently in the midst of his best offensive season since 2023, leading all NL batters in average. In fact, the veteran 2B has only struck out 21 times. It’s a massive addition to a Phillies lineup that has posted the seventh-highest strikeout rate (23.6%) in baseball, according to FanGraphs.

Per Baseball Savant, Arraez strikes out just 4.5% of the time, which ranks in the 100th percentile. In addition, the four-time All-Star has recorded a 42.8% squared-up rate, also placing him in the 100th percentile.

As for Kilian, the Phillies acquired a right-handed arm who adds some depth to their bullpen. Kilian is embarking on his first full season at the MLB level and has logged a 3.67 xFIP in 44.1 innings. He should factor into some middle relief opportunities for Philadelphia.

If Harper can thrive in right field as he did earlier in his Phillies tenure, the acquisition of Arraez could be beneficial both offensively and defensively. Obviously, it's risky considering that Arraez is a free agent after the season, but these are the types of moves that contenders need to make.

The Giants are 18 games below .500 and nowhere near being a playoff team in 2026. As a result, selling an asset like Arraez makes a ton of sense for San Francisco.

Marquez is the crown jewel of this deal and was ranked as the Phillies’ No. 4 prospect, according to Baseball America. The 20-year-old possesses a fastball that tops out at 98 mph while also utilizing a low-80s changeup that keeps hitters off balance. 

Marquez has torn up Class A, combining to go 6-1 with a 1.68 ERA in 12 outings between Low-A Clearwater and High-A Jersey Shore. The flame-throwing right-hander has yielded 3 or fewer hits in 10 of his 12 starts, racking up at least 9 strikeouts on six occasions.

On the other hand, Gair was selected in the 13th round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Phillies. It's worth noting that he missed the entire 2024 season due to a right elbow injury, but he did return in 2026.

Gair has posted a 4.91 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP, recording 58 strikeouts in 33.0 innings this year. Via Baseball America, Gair projects as a late-innings reliever if he can consistently find the strike zone.
