Netherlands vs. Sweden is set to kick off the slate World Cup games on Saturday, June 20, at 1 p.m. ET in a battle between two European sides who impressed in their first matches.
Sweden comes in as the underdogs, despite dominating Tunisia in their first Group F match, 5-1. Netherlands is favored to win outright, with a 1.69x payout on PrizePicks, despite drawing 2-2 with Japan in their World Cup opener.
This is a key game for both sides, as Group F is one of the few groups where three teams all have realistic paths to win it. If Netherlands cannot win this match, it puts their hopes to win the group in jeopardy.

Netherlands vs. Sweden World Cup 2026 Prediction, Spread, Over/Under – Saturday, June 20
How to watch Netherlands vs. Sweden: FOX (English) / Telemundo/Peacock (Spanish)
Kickoff Time: 1 p.m. ET
Venue: NRG Stadium (Houston Stadium), Houston, Texas
Group: Group F
Sweden comes in at No. 20 in our latest World Cup power rankings, while Netherlands sits at No. 6; the gap is larger in the FIFA rankings, where they’re No. 34 and No. 8, respectively.
Both Netherlands and Sweden played memorable opening matches; Sweden gave us one of the biggest surprises of Matchday 1, scoring 5 goals, while Netherlands looked sharp, but lacked late creativity to close the door on Japan.
Netherlands opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a draw, as Japan leveled it at 2-2 in the 89th minute.
The Oranje controlled possession (54.9%) and were efficient offensively with an 89% pass completion rate. However, they lacked the creativity in the final third required to break down Japan’s high-work-rate defense — on 10 shots, they accumulated just 0.59 expected goals (xG), per FotMob.
Sweden, on the other hand, had no problem around the goal; on just 2.09 xG, they scored 5 goals, netting over half of their 7 shots on target. They were direct to the goal and impressively clinical in transition.
That brings us to this match, where we’ll see Netherlands’ control vs. Sweden’s structure and offensive punch. The way Sweden defends in structure and wins second balls to get Alexander Isak and Viktor Einar Gyökeres attacking situations makes the Swedes a live underdog in any matchup — even with Netherlands as solid favorites.
Netherlands vs. Sweden: Favorite to Win, Spread, Total Goals – Saturday, June 20
Netherlands enters Saturday’s fixture as the favorite, with a 67% implied chance to win and returning a 1.69x payout with a win, via PrizePicks Team Picks. They desperately need a win here, even with Tunisia still on the schedule.
The underdog Sweden national team may look to focus their energy on defense, as a point would go a long way to securing their spot in the next round, considering goal differential.

Netherlands vs. Sweden Prediction to Win for World Cup 2026
Let’s not get it twisted: Sweden was incredibly impressive in their first World Cup match, and they deserve the attention and consideration they’re getting for their performance. Five goals in a World Cup match is nothing to scoff at.
Obviously, if the Swedes remain that efficient in the final third — 7-of-13 shots on target, 5-of-7 SOT for goals, and they prevent teams from creating real dangerous chances, they can win against anyone.
But I’m inclined to believe in the stability of Netherlands, as their Matchday 1 profile — against a much better opponent in Japan — is the type of production you can count on. They controlled possession, pushed from the midfield into the final third, and got plenty of crossing volume.
I’m also inclined to believe that Netherlands has a softer price here due to the quality of these teams’ opponents in Matchday 1. The public may not be factoring in that Tunisia collapsed and looked pathetic on defense, nearly just as much as Sweden won.
To be blunt, Tunisia looked like one of the worst teams in the World Cup vs. Sweden — and our updated World Cup power rankings agree, placing them at No. 48 (there are only 48 teams, by the way). Meanwhile, Japan is ranked 13th.
Was Netherlands perfect in their 2-2 draw to Japan? Absolutely not. Just as was expected, they lacked finishing power and creativity to get great chances. But Japan is an incredibly creative team, they worked harder, and they haven’t lost to a European side since 2019 in regulation time. It’s a very respectable draw vs. a side that has real potential.
Let’s not forget that this Netherlands defense — anchored by Virgil van Dijk and elite speed from Van de Ven, is one of the best in the tournament. Japan only had 0.34 xG, despite putting two in, including one on a corner.
Before Japan, the Oranje hadn’t given up 2 goals in their last eight matches (Euros and friendlies). Meanwhile, Sweden has not kept a clean sheet in 12 matches.
If we step back, we have a great comparison point for these two teams: the 2025 European Qualifying matches.
Netherlands ranked fifth in goals allowed per game (0.5); Sweden ranked 35th (1.9). Offensively, Netherlands ranked ninth in xG at 18.9 (27 actual goals), while Sweden ranked 27th with 10.2 (10 actual goals).

There are scenarios where Netherlands may struggle to break down Sweden, especially if they drop deep and play for the draw, then convert an early chance, allowing them to pack the box even more.
In that case, it may be difficult for Netherlands to overcome a deficit vs. Sweden’s solid defense, especially with no elite star finisher — unless one is to emerge in this tournament (I’m looking at you, Cody Gakpo). Even so, Netherlands could get more creative if they do find themselves down a goal, and they have the possession control to get plenty of chances.

Netherlands vs. Sweden Picks & Player Stats for World Cup Game: 6/19/26
Here are the top Netherlands vs. Sweden picks to target on PrizePicks for Saturday, June 20. Today’s World Cup 2026 picks are headlined by Virgil Van Dijk and Sweden’s two-headed striker combo.
Netherlands CB Virgil Van Dijk – 83.5 Passes Attempted
- Van Dijk attempted 102 passes in Netherlands’ 2-2 draw vs. Japan, the highest mark on the team and well above this projection.
- He completed 95 of those passes at a stellar 93% rate.
- Van Dijk also completed 14 of 17 line breaks vs. Japan, showing his passing volume included progression upfield.
- Sweden may defend deeper than Japan and look for transition chances through Isak and Gyökeres, which could put Van Dijk on the ball often.
- If Oranje dictate possession, Van Dijk will likely be heavily involved in the buildup.
- Van Dijk recorded 7 clearances vs. Japan, clearing this 5-clearance projection as well, and may be needed in a similar fashion if Sweden can press the back line. He’s projected for 5 clearances on PrizePicks.

Sweden FWs Alexander Isak + Viktor Gyökeres – 4 Shots (Combo)
- Isak and Gyökeres combined for 8 shots vs. Tunisia: Gyökeres had 5 shots, while Isak had 3 shots.

- Sweden scored 5 goals on 13 total shots in that game, with 7 shots on target. Their attack was highly concentrated through these front two.
- FotMob credits Gyökeres with 4 chances created vs. Tunisia, while Isak is listed with 2 big chances created and 2 assists. They were not just finishing attacks, but also creating for one another and taxing the Tunisia defense.
- Across Sweden’s last three competitive matches — Ukraine, Poland, Tunisia — Gyökeres has scored 5 goals: a hat trick vs. Ukraine, the winner vs. Poland, and one vs. Tunisia.
