Mexico Team Preview vs. South Africa

As the 2026 World Cup begins, Mexico is viewed as the favorite to win Group A, but it may not exactly be a formality this time around.

Mexico suffered a group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup after going 1-1-1 in its three matches. It marked the first time since 1978 that the Mexican side had failed to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup.

Now, El Tri head coach Javier Aguirre brings an impressive blend of experience and young talent to this year’s World Cup squad — and they'll get home-field advantage throughout most of the tournament, including the opener.

The group will still lean on veteran forward Raúl Jiménez for scoring; Jiménez finished the 2025-26 Premier League season with the second-most goals (9) for Fulham, despite being 35 years old.

But there’s fair skepticism in asking a 35-year-old striker to carry the attack across a World Cup run, especially when Mexico’s ceiling may depend more on the younger players around him in the midfield and defense.

El Tri captain Edson Álvarez, while already established, remains one of the team’s most important players at 28. Jiménez’s experience matters, but Mexico’s opener vs. South Africa could say more about whether the next generation is ready to lead than whether the veteran can still produce moments.

The co-host nation isn’t a team that typically dominates time of possession, but it uses its physicality in order to create offense. Mexico will be looking to top its best World Cup finish of reaching the quarterfinals, which came in 1970 and 1986.

Mexico will be without goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón in the World Cup, as he ruptured his Achilles tendon earlier this year. As a result, Raúl Rangel of C.D. Guadalajara in Liga MX will likely be the team’s starting goalkeeper throughout the tournament.

South Africa Team Preview vs. Mexico

Meanwhile, South Africa has qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 2010. In its three World Cup appearances, South Africa has never made it out of the group stage.

In the 2010 World Cup, South Africa also produced a 1-1-1 record and failed to reach the knockout stage. Mexico and South Africa actually did battle in their respective World Cup openers in 2010, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Bafana Bafana did enjoy considerable success in qualifying, with five wins and two losses. In addition, South Africa recently reached the knockout stages of the AFCON and the COSAFA Cup under head coach Hugo Broos.

According to PrizePicks Team Picks, South Africa is the biggest underdog to reach the knockout stage (a 2.5x payout for Yes) in Group A.

South Africa is led by star forward Oswin Appollis, who has been a goal-scoring threat for the Orlando Pirates in the South African Premiership. Appollis finished second in goals (9) on the Pirates during the 2025-26 campaign.

The top two teams in Group A will automatically advance to the knockout stage as part of the 48-team tournament — if one team can get three points here, it's a huge leg up.
