Mexico Projected Starting Lineup for World Cup 2026

A familiar face will be at the forefront of Mexico’s attack, as 35-year-old F Raul Jimenez is leading the charge.

Other notable names alongside Jimenez are MF Edson Alvarez and 40-year-old GK Guillermo Ochoa, though GK Raul Rengel is expected to start in front of net.

Additionally, 17-year-old Gilberto Mora is a rising star for manager Javier Aguirre’s side.

Projected Mexico Formation: 4-3-3

  • Goalkeeper: Raul Rengel
  • Defense: Jesus Gallardo, Johan Vasquez, Cesar Montes, Israel Reyes
  • Midfield: Edson Alvarez, Alvaro Fidalgo, Gilberto Mora
  • Forwards: Alexis Vega, Raul Jimenez, Roberto Alvarado

The Mexico World Cup XI could change based on form, injuries, and matchup, but the Mexico core should headline Edson Alvarez and Raul Jimenez.

How Mexico Qualified for World Cup 2026

Due to being one of the co-host nations along with the United States and Canada, Mexico automatically qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

Best Player for Mexico: Raul Jimenez

As a member of Fulham in the Premier League, Jimenez is playing in his fourth consecutive World Cup. Across the 2025-26 campaign in all competitions, Jimenez tallied double-digit goals for the second straight year for Fulham.

In just the 2025-26 EPL season, Jimenez scored the second-most goals on Fulham, and he led the team in xG per 90 minutes (0.47), via FotMob. It’s been revealed that Jimenez will be leaving Fulham this summer, so the World Cup will allow the veteran striker to showcase for his next club.

With heavy expectations from their home fans, Mexico will need Jimenez to deliver quality play in attack to be competitive in the tournament.

On PrizePicks, Jimenez’s tourney projection for total goals scored is sitting at 2.5.

Manager Aguirre’s squad isn’t the flashiest when it takes the pitch, as the group doesn't prioritize dominating possession. El Tri relies on being physical and dispossessing opponents to generate chances.

Even with Jimenez having spurts of being an effective striker, Mexico isn’t overly creative on the attack. At the same time, Alvarez and Mora have high work rates and can excel at creating more opportunities in the midfield.

The loud and energetic Mexico fans are hopeful to watch their national club make a push as a co-host nation despite concerns about the team’s lack of attacking prowess.

Mexico to Win 2026 World Cup

Yes 33.33x | No N/A

In their previous two World Cups where they were a host nation, Mexico has advanced to the quarterfinals.

Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, El Tri aren’t expected to be a contender to win it all, but that doesn’t mean they can’t win Group A, advance to the knockout stage, or even prove folks wrong.

Mexico to Win World Cup Group A

Yes 1.66x | No 2.12x

Even without Mexico having an opportunity to find a rhythm with World Cup qualifying games due to being a host nation, they received a nice draw in Group A.

Mexico is the clear favorite to win the group, with South Korea being the apparent biggest threat behind them.

Mexico to Advance to World Cup Knockout Stage

Yes 1.05x | No 8.33x

Given the new format where the top two teams from each group and the top eight third-place teams advance past the group stage, Mexico’s outlook for experiencing an early exit may be decreased tremendously.

El Tri were eliminated in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, though they had an unfortunate draw with Argentina and Poland in their group.
