Last season didn’t go well for Kirby (3.59 xFIP in 116.0 IP, 19 starts), as he posted a career-worst ERA (4.21), hard-hit rate allowed (43.9%), and WAR (0.7). 2025 for the Mariners brought excitement back, as they won their first division title since 2001. Although the year ended in the American League Championship Series, there was optimism for the future. It could be short-lived, however, as the team is regressing this year. 

Seattle has one of the top pitching staffs in baseball, ranking sixth in xERA (3.89) and xFIP (3.89), but its offense has hindered the team by ranking 25th in WAR (9.6) and 26th in wOBA (.306). Last year, offensive power carried them, including a 42.8% hard-hit rate that ranked fourth. This year, that has dropped to 38.0% (18th).

Luckily for the Mariners, there’s parity throughout the AL, so they are in contention in the division and are only 1.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.

The Rangers will counter with Rocker (4.20 xFIP in 96.0 IP, 19 appearances). Rocker is pitching better than last year, going from a 5.73 xERA in 2025 to 4.63 this season, but that xERA is only in the 30th percentile. There's optimism that he can further improve, evidenced by going from a 3.9% weak contact rate last season to 5.2% now.

It was only in 2023 that the Rangers were celebrating their first World Series championship, but the following two seasons were a disappointment seeing them miss the playoffs in each. 

This season, they're back in contention but currently don't quite look like a championship contender. Their offense is great, sitting second in the AL in wOBA (.320), but Texas is only eighth in the AL in xERA (4.15). If the Rangers want to get back to the World Series, they may need to improve the pitching staff at the trade deadline.
