Jalen Williams Injury Update: Is He Playing vs. 76ers?
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Williams will return for Monday’s game against the 76ers. He's been removed from the NBA’s official injury report.
Williams has missed Oklahoma City’s last 16 games over the last five weeks and change while he’s dealt with a strained hamstring. The Thunder F has injured his hamstring twice this season alone.
Per Charania, the Thunder are hoping that Williams can “establish a rhythm” in the final 11 regular-season games prior to the playoffs getting underway next month.
The Thunder have continued to enjoy an abundance of success, even with Williams sidelined. In fact, Oklahoma City has a 37-8 record without Williams in the lineup.
The starting five of PG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, F Lu Dort, Williams, C-PF Chet Holmgren, and C Isaiah Hartenstein has only played five games together all season. According to ESPN, the Thunder have registered the second-most missed games as a result of injuries, trailing only the Memphis Grizzlies.
Williams has been limited to just 26 games, averaging 17.5 points, 5.4 assists, and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 31.3% from beyond the arc.
Will Jalen Williams Be on a Minutes Restriction?
It’s possible that Williams faces a minutes restriction in his return, but a plan hasn’t been revealed by the Thunder.
Given Williams' multiple hamstring ailments, head coach Mark Daigneault may want to ease him back into the rotation. Williams hasn’t played since February 11 against the Phoenix Suns, when he logged 20 minutes of action.
Williams missed the first 19 games of the season while he recovered from wrist surgery. He first sustained a strained hamstring on January 17 against the Miami Heat and ended up missing the next 10 games.
Then, Williams re-aggravated the hamstring strain just two games after returning to the lineup. He had 28 points on a sensational 11-of-12 shooting performance in a February 11 before being forced to leave the action.
Williams could be in Oklahoma City’s starting lineup against Philadelphia, but limited stretches of playing time might be in the cards. After all, he's an integral part of the Thunder’s upcoming pursuit of a second consecutive NBA title.
