The match takes place at Estadio Abanca-Riazor in La Coruña, Spain, with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m. ET. Deportivo is favored to win, with a 2.12x payout on PrizePicks, while the underdog Elche has a 3.44x payout if they win.

The former club of Rivaldo and Bebeto has fallen a long way from their 2004 Champions League semifinal appearance, but they mark their 120th anniversary with a return to La Liga. Kickoff Time: 3:00 p.m. ET

Venue: Estadio Abanca-Riazor, La Coruña, Spain

Deportivo gained automatic promotion back in May by finishing second in the Segunda, Spain’s second tier. Their resulting promotion provided them with an influx of cash, which they’ve used to quickly boost the quality of their squad.

The name most familiar to casuals is likely ST Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whom many fans will remember from his time at Arsenal, Chelsea, and Borussia Dortmund. While 37 years of age, he still possesses plenty of talent and is coming off a 14-goal campaign with Marseille.

He will likely form a strike partnership at the head of a 4-4-2 that morphs into a 4-3-1-2 in attack, with AM Luismi Cruz often tucking in centrally from his position on either the right or left. LB Angelino, on loan from Roma, will provide support down the left flank, while Mallorca transfer GK Leo Roman will be asked to shore up the back line.

Manager Antonio Hidalgo’s side was challenged in the preseason and did quite well. They picked up a win over Serie A side Genoa while drawing against fellow Italians Fiorentina. They lost 1-0 to Real Madrid midweek but played fairly evenly with the Spanish giants, who fielded a strong lineup.

Elche escaped by the skin of their teeth last season, taking 17 points from their final nine matches to avoid the drop. They responded with a transfer window that has seen them bring in eight new players, most notably the loan of AM Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton and Hove Albion.

While the young midfielder is likely to begin Monday’s match on the bench, many of their new signings will feature. ST Fer Nino of Burgos CF, RB Buba Sangare of Roma, and CB Victor Chust of Cadiz should all feature from the start.

Additionally, they’ll look to CB David Affengruber to continue to hold down the back line. Multiple clubs have been linked to him recently, including the likes of Roma and Bournemouth.

New manager Martin Anselmi utilized a 3-5-2 and 3-4-2-1 setup in the preseason, similar to how they lined up last season. He’s seen somewhat disappointing results, managing just one win and two draws against clubs from South Africa, Malaysia, and the UAE. Elche did finish with a 3-0 victory over French side Toulouse, but little is known about the match publicly.

Elche’s defense last season was awful, conceding 57 goals in 38 matches. Away from home, no La Liga side took fewer than their eight points as they managed just one victory and five draws while conceding twice as many goals as they scored.

Deportivo allowed just over 1.0 goal per match, albeit against lesser competition, but only Las Palmas and Eibar conceded fewer goals. Oddly, Deportivo was a monster on the road, taking 39 of a possible 63 points and leading all clubs. However, they claimed just 11 wins in 21 home matches, losing five and finishing 10th in home points.

They’ll take solace in playing at home in a raucous environment against a side dealing with some injury issues, paired with struggles on the road. The emotion of returning to La Liga after nearly a decade away could be the lift they need to claim three points ahead of a difficult opening stretch of matches.

The last four times that Elche have opened a La Liga campaign on the road, they have lost by an identical 3-0 scoreline.
