Barcelona looks to continue a tremendous run of form at home when they host Newcastle in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie on Wednesday, March 18.

The match kicks off at 1:45 p.m. ET on Paramount+ with everything to play for following a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park last week. Below, we’ll break down our Barcelona vs. Newcastle prediction and picks for Wednesday's Champions League Round of 16 game.

Barcelona have won 15 consecutive home fixtures in all competitions, and have immense attacking depth to call upon.

Can Newcastle withstand the pressure as a road underdog and find a way to hurt Barcelona’s aggressively high defensive line to reach the Champions League quarterfinal stage for just the first time?

Barcelona vs. Newcastle Prediction, Preview for Champions League – Wednesday, March 18

Newcastle looked to have an advantage after the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 as the sides entered stoppage time at St. James’ Park.

Instead, a Harvey Barnes goal on 86’ was cancelled out by a late penalty from Lamine Yamal to send the tie back to Camp Nou with both sides level, 1-1, on aggregate.

That suits Barcelona just fine, given what they’ve done at home this season. The Catalans have won all 13 matches they have played since the reopening of the renovated Camp Nou, and have won 15 straight matches they’ve hosted in all competitions.

Both sides must overcome significant injuries if they hope to advance.

Barcelona will be without MF Frenkie de Jong, while their defensive ranks will be hit via the absence of Jules Kounde, Alejandro Balde, and Andreas Christensen.

MF Bruno Guimaraes continues to miss out for the Magpies, robbing them of perhaps their most influential player. Lewis Miley and Fabian Schar are still absent on the defense.

The Magpies did well to limit Yamal’s impact in the first matchup. That will have to continue, given the phenom has either scored or assisted on 12 goals in his last 11 home outings in this competition.

Barcelona’s last six matches have seen them outscore their opponents 17-4, claiming five victories in the process. Newcastle’s recent form has been fairly inconsistent, with three wins and three losses across last seven matches

Newcastle will need to improve on their away defense in the Champions League if they hope to advance.

Aside from their 6-1 win at lowly Qarabag, the Magpies have allowed 6.75 shots on target in four away fixtures. That is nearly twice the amount they’ve conceded in five home fixtures in the competition.

Given Hansi Flick’s attacking options, that could be the difference. Yamal, Raphinha, and Ferran Torres are expected to lead the line for Barcelona, but Robert Lewandowski, Dani Olmo, and Marcus Rashford can also be called upon to influence proceedings — especially if the match heads to extra time.
