Canada left-back Alphonso Davies is officially listed as out for Friday's Canada vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina World Cup match from Toronto Stadium at 3 p.m. ET.

Davies, Canada’s captain, suffered a muscle injury in early May, and was in doubt for the host country’s opening match on Friday, June 12. He’ll officially miss the Canadian’s World Cup opener today.

Manager Jesse Marsch will depend on veteran defender Richie Laryea to start in Davies’ place at left-back for Canada’s World Cup opener.

Below, we'll break down the latest Alphonso Davies injury update for Friday, how long Davies will be out for, and what World Cup picks to potentially target on PrizePicks with Davies out.

Alphonso Davies Injury Update: Is Davies Playing Today vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina?

Alphoso Davies suffered a hamstring tear during Bayern's Champions League semifinal against PSG on May 6, and is still recovering from a relatively significant injury.

Davies has officially been ruled out for Friday's game vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina. Davies’ fitness had been up in the air despite early rumblings he was going to miss Canada’s World Cup opener.

Marsch confirmed Davies had an MRI on Thursday that appeared promising, but not enough for the squad’s captain to get the nod.

Davies was Marsch's primary source of width on the left side, freeing midfielders to tuck inside and push the tempo. Without him, Canada trades a ton of explosive attacking threats that Davies’ provides for some additional defensive stability, as Canada loses their biggest transition threat vs. Bosnia today.

How Long is Alphonso Davies Out?

Canada’s manager said they would begin ramping Davies’ rehab up, and we could see the star defender on Canada’s squad for Matchday 2, when Canada take on Qatar on June 18.

Davies himself suggested his participation in the tournament could be in jeopardy, though the most recent MRI appears to have eased those concerns, with the star defender now expected to play at some point, but looks unlikely to be fit for the group stage.

What Canada Players to Target for PrizePicks with Davies Out?

Without Davies, Canada tightens up defensively and slows their attacking rhythm, building through quick passes rather than relying on the explosive overlapping runs that define Davies’ game.

Surprisingly, Canada has actually performed better without Davies in recent years — going 10-6-3 in 19 matches without him, averaging 1.89 points per game compared to 1.46 with him starting, per SofaScore.

Here are Canada’s players who may benefit most statistically on PrizePicks with Davies out vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina today, plus their World Cup stat projections for Friday.

  • LB Richie Laryea — 1.5 Fouls Drawn (Goblin) / 1.5 Shots (Demon) / 2.5 Fouls (Demon)
  • CB Derek Cornelius — 4.5 Clearances / 54.5 Passes Attempted / 0.5 Fouls Drawn (Goblin)
  • LM Liam Millar  — 3.5 Shots / 0.5 Goals + Assist / 0.5 Fouls (Goblin)

Laryea is the most likely beneficiary from Davies injury, as the veteran fullback is expected to start in his place. Laryea has started in nine matches for Toronto FC this year, with 2 goals and 1 assist. He’s coming off his own injury, as he’s been sidelined since April 25 due to a hamstring injury.

The 31-year-old started at left back in each of Canada’s two pre-tournament friendlies, but has also played at center and right back for Toronto FC this year.

Davies is out, Laryea is expected to start, and Canada’s opening World Cup match is just hours away.

Filling the shoes of the captain won’t be easy, but Canada has had to play without Davies before due to other injuries in the past. The Bayern Munich star has played in just two of Canada’s last 21 matches.
