2024 Home Run Derby Rules and Format

The Home Run Derby follows a head-to-head bracket format with eight participants. Here’s how it works:

  1. Seeding: Players are seeded 1 through 8 based on their home run totals for the season.
  2. Rounds: The competition consists of three rounds: Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals.
  3. Time Limit: Each player gets four minutes per round to hit as many home runs as possible.
  4. Bonus Time: Players can earn 30 seconds of bonus time if they hit at least two home runs of 440 feet or more. An additional 30 seconds can be earned if they hit one home run of at least 475 feet.
  5. Tiebreakers: In case of a tie, players will have a 60-second swing-off. If still tied, a three-swing tiebreaker will determine the winner.
  6. Advancement: The player with the most home runs in each head-to-head matchup advances to the next round.

History of the Home Run Derby

The Home Run Derby has been a staple of the MLB All-Star festivities since its inception in 1985. Over the years, it has evolved into a showcase of raw power and competitive spirit.

Notable moments include Ken Griffey Jr.'s three titles in the 1990s, Josh Hamilton's record 28 home runs in a single round in 2008, and the recent dominance of Pete Alonso.

The Derby not only highlights the league’s top power hitters but also provides unforgettable moments that resonate with fans long after the event concludes.
