How Does World Cup Knockout Stage Qualifying Work?
32 teams will qualify for the 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage, starting with the Round of 32 on June 28. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups will qualify automatically; the top team in the group will be seeded higher than the No. 2 team.
Within the same group, tiebreakers for the top seed are broken by the following in group play, in order:
- Head-to-head
- Goal differential in all matches
- Goals scored in all matches
- Highest team conduct score (lowest yellow/red cards obtained
- Highest ranking according to most recent FIFA World Ranking
New this year is the head-to-head being the top tiebreaker, jumping goal differential, which likely will make more Matchday 3 games meaningless. This applies to all group seeding, not just the No. 1 spot.
In addition, the top eight third-place teams across groups will advance to the knockout stage.
The eight third-place teams are decided by the following criteria:
- Points
