How Does World Cup Knockout Stage Qualifying Work?
32 teams will qualify for the 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage, starting with the Round of 32 on June 28. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups will qualify automatically; the top team in the group will be seeded higher than the No. 2 team.
Within the same group, tiebreakers for the top seed are broken by the following in group play, in order:
- Head-to-head
- Goal differential in all matches
- Goals scored in all matches
- Highest team conduct score (lowest yellow/red cards obtained
- Highest ranking according to most recent FIFA World Ranking
New this year is the head-to-head being the top tiebreaker, jumping goal differential, which likely will make more Matchday 3 games meaningless. This applies to all group seeding, not just the No. 1 spot.
In addition, the top eight third-place teams across groups will advance to the knockout stage.
The eight third-place teams are decided by the following criteria:
- Points
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Team conduct score
- FIFA World Rankings
World Cup Group A Results: Mexico, South Africa Qualify for Knockout Stage
Mexico had already secured its spot in the knockout stage, but came through with three second-half goals vs. Czechia to complete the perfect group stage.
That gave South Africa the chance to clinch their spot in the Round of 32, and they did just that.
With a 63rd minute goal from Thapelo Maseko, Bafana Banafa took a 1-0 lead and secured 4 points, and a spot in the knockout stage.
Final Group A Standings in 2026 World Cup:
- Mexico – 9 points – 3-0-0 – Winner ✅
- South Africa – 4 points – 1-1-1 – Qualified ✅
- South Korea – 3 points – 1-0-2
- Czechia – 1 point – 1-0-2 – Eliminated ❌

World Cup Group B Results: Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia Qualify for Knockout Stage
After Matchday 3, Switzerland has officially won Group B, with a 2-1 win over Canada. Canada will advance as runner-up, but will not have the advantage of staying on home soil for their Round of 32 match.
Bosnia and Herzegovina took care of business with a 3-1 win over Qatar, setting them atop all third-place teams, and setting them up with a matchup vs. USA in the Round of 32 on July 1.
Final Group B Standings in 2026 World Cup:
- Switzerland – 7 points – 2-1-0 – Winner ✅
- Canada – 4 points – 1-1-1 (+5 GD) – Qualified ✅
- Bosnia and Herzegovina – 4 points – 1-1-1 (-1 GD) – Third-Place Qualifier ✅
- Qatar – 1 point – 0-1-2 – Eliminated ❌

World Cup Group C: Brazil, Morocco Qualify for Knockout Stage
After Matchday 3, Brazil has officially won Group C, with 2 dominant wins after their Matchday 1 draw with Morocco to open the World Cup. They will qualify ahead of Morocco, which is also on 7 points, on goal differential; Brazil is at +6 after a 3-0 win vs. Scotland, while Morocco finishes at +3.
As of Friday morning, Scotland is still live to qualify for the knockout stage as a third-place team, but it's chances are thinning following the Ecuador win. They need Cape Verde and Belgium both to lose outright (either team would jump Scotland with a draw), and DR Congo and Senegal to lose or draw.
Final Group C Standings in 2026 World Cup:
- Brazil – 7 points – 2-1-0 – Winner ✅
- Morocco – 7 points – 2-1-0 – Qualified ✅
- Scotland – 3 points – 1-0-2
- Haiti – 0 points – 0-0-3 – Eliminated ❌

World Cup Group D Results: USA, Australia Qualify for Knockout Stage – Paraguay Likely
USA clinched the Group D crown with back-to-back wins to open the World Cup, which allowed the Americans to rest most of their key starters in the final group stage match — which they lost, 3-2, on a game-winning goal in the final seconds by Türkiye.
Meanwhile, Australia and Paraguay played one of the most uninteresting matches of the World Cup, each with under 1.0 xG.
The draw allows both teams a path to qualify for the Round of 32; Australia is now guaranteed a knockout stage spot, while Paraguay sits in fourth in the third-place rankings with six teams left to play.
Final Group D Standings in 2026 World Cup:
- USA – 6 points – 2-0-1 – Winner ✅
- Australia – 4 points – 1-1-1 – Qualified ✅
- Paraguay – 4 points – 1-1-1
- Türkiye – 3 points – 1-0-2 – Eliminated ❌

World Cup Group E Results: Germany, Ivory Coast, Ecuador Qualify to Knockout Stage
Germany clinched Group E with wins over Curaçao and Ivory Coast, becoming one of the tournament's dominant forces early.
Despite that, Germany ran out its best starting XI — outside of injuries — vs. Ecuador, which needed a win vs. group-winner Germany to keep its knockout stage hopes alive. After conceding in the 2nd minute, Ecuador equalized in the 9th minute, then took the 2-1 lead on a beautiful Gonzalo Plata touch, which would be the winning goal.
Ivory Coast controlled Curaçao in a 2-0 win, but finished as the Group E runner-up on goal differential — which Germany leads, 6-2.
Final Group E Standings in 2026 World Cup:
- Germany – 6 points – 2-0-1 – Winner ✅
- Ivory Coast – 6 points – 2-0-1 – Qualified ✅
- Ecuador – 4 points – 1-1-1 – Third-Place Qualifier ✅
- Curaçao – 1 point – 0-1-2 – Eliminated ❌

World Cup Group F Results: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden Qualify for Knockout Stage
It was always unlikely that Netherlands would get jumped on Matchday 3, as they faced one of the weakest teams in the group in Tunisia. The Oranje cruised to a 3-1 win behind two goals in the first 10 minutes.
Japan and Sweden played to a 1-1 draw, as Japan lacked the finishing touch on their chances, while Sweden couldn't crack Japan's disciplined defense structure.
Although a win would have clinched the runner-up spot in Group F, the tie was crucial for Sweden, who punched their ticket to the knockout stage by the end of Thursday's games.
Final Group F Standings in 2026 World Cup:
- Netherlands – 7 points – 2-1-0 – Winner ✅
- Japan – 5 points – 1-2-0 – Qualified ✅
- Sweden – 4 points – 1-1-1 – Third-Place Qualifier ✅
- Tunisia – 0 points – 0-0-3 – Eliminated ❌

World Cup Group G: Who Has Qualified for the Knockout Stage?
Group G is the most compressed of the tournament so far, with every team still in reach of winning. However, it's also the least talented group, especially as Belgium lacks any danger to this point.
Egypt leads with 4 points, while Iran, Belgium, and New Zealand are all closely packed behind, with no team eliminated heading into Matchday 3. Although New Zealand cannot win the group, all four teams are still live to clinch one of the top two spots in the group.
Group G Standings in 2026 World Cup:
- Egypt – 4 points – 1-1-0
- Iran – 2 points – 0-2-0
- Belgium – 2 points – 0-2-0
- New Zealand – 1 point – 0-1-1

World Cup Group H: Who Has Qualified for the Knockout Stage?
Despite a disappointing result in Matchday 1 — a 0-0 draw vs. Cape Verde, Spain leads Group H on 4 points. Uruguay, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia are all still alive in the race to win the group.
No team has clinched or been eliminated, but Cape Verde has impressed the world with two draws vs. the strongest teams in the group.
Matchday 3 pits Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia and Uruguay vs. Spain on Friday, June 26, at 8 p.m. ET.
Group H Standings in 2026 World Cup:

World Cup Group J: Who Has Qualified for the Knockout Stage?
Argentina's win over Austria on June 22, behind Lionel Messi's record-breaking brace, secured their place in the Round of 32 as the Group J winners.
Algeria's subsequent victory over Jordan clinched first place in Group J for Argentina and knocked Jordan out of contention. Austria vs. Algeria meet in the final Matchday 3 time slot to decide the 2-seed from Group J, although it’s not exactly a coveted position.
Both may already have qualified for the knockout stage by the time they play; in which case, a 0-0 draw will guarantee that both teams go through. In addition, the second-place team will have to play Spain in the Round of 32, assuming that Spain wins their group.
Group J Standings in 2026 World Cup:
- Argentina – 6 points – 2-0-0 – Clinched Group ✅
- Austria – 3 points – 1-0-1
- Algeria – 3 points – 1-0-1
