How Does the World Cup Bracket Work in 2026?

The 2026 World Cup bracket is a 32-team single-elimination knockout tournament. For the first time in World Cup history, 32 teams are in the knockout stage; previously, it was only 16 teams.

Each game has one winner — one team that advances. The winning team moves on to the next round, while the losing team is eliminated from the World Cup.

The only exception is the Semifinals, where both losing teams will play in a Third Place game before the World Cup Final.

If a World Cup knockout match is tied after 90 minutes, the game goes to a 30-minute extra time period, which will run for the entire 30 minutes, regardless of whether a team scores.

If it is still tied after extra time, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout; each team will take five penalty kicks to decide the winner.
