Iga Swiatek isn’t dominating the way she has in past seasons, but she won the Wimbledon title in emphatic fashion last year and will begin her title defense against American Taylor Townsend.
Curiously, Swiatek hasn’t won any titles in 2026, and she lost her only grass tune-up match ahead of this event. That makes it harder to envision her making a run back to the final, but Swiatek wasn’t necessarily expected to lift the trophy last year, either, as grass was previously viewed as her weakest surface.
Regardless of any questions surrounding Swiatek, Townsend might not be the opponent to give her too much trouble.
While the American has found her groove as an excellent doubles player, winning multiple major doubles titles, she continues to have muted results in singles. Outside of two fourth-round appearances at the US Open in 2025 and 2019, Townsend typically lasts only one or two rounds in majors.
She’s actually failed to advance past the first round in seven of her last nine Grand Slams.
Most recently, Townsend lost in the first round at Roland Garros and then failed to get out of qualifying on grass at Bad Homburg.
Per Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, Swiatek is showing a hefty 85.5% win probability.

With Alexander Zverev’s prime years sandwiched between the tail end of the “Big Three” era and the subsequent rise of Jannick Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, it was beginning to look like the German might never win that elusive major trophy despite coming close several times.
That all changed at the 2026 French Open, as the 29-year-old capitalized on Alcaraz's absence and benefited from the early exits of Sinner and Novak Djokovic.
With the monkey off his back, perhaps Zverev can play more freely at a tournament that hasn’t been too kind to him over the years. While the German has been at least a finalist at the other three majors, he’s never advanced past the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Despite the lack of success — at least by his standards — it’s not like Zverev is a total slouch on grass. Although none of his 25 career titles have come on the surface, he’s amassed a 66.7% grass win percentage.
In preparation for Wimbledon, Zverev competed at Halle, reaching the semifinals for the fourth consecutive season. Even if it isn’t his best surface, a run to the second week at Wimbledon shouldn’t be off the table.
Zverev does draw an intriguing first-round opponent in Alexander Blockx, though.
Blockx is an up-and-comer who’s quickly risen the ranks following a strong clay season. The 21-year-old began 2026 ranked outside the top 100, but after going 12-4 in tour-level clay matches, he’s reached world No. 36 ahead of Wimbledon. Most notably, the Belgian phenom reached the semifinals in Madrid, a Masters 1000 tournament.
However, despite all that momentum, Blockx lost some steam after being forced to withdraw from the second round at the French Open due to a freak accident in practice that injured his ankle.
As a result, Blockx didn’t play a single grass match in the lead-up to this match, which is notable for a player who has never competed in the Wimbledon main draw.
What’s also working against him is that during that fantastic stretch on clay, Zverev was a roadblock he couldn’t overcome, as the German beat Blockx twice in straight sets at Madrid and Rome.
Ultimately, the young Belgian could be up against it to trouble the newly minted major champion. Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings give Zverev an 83.0% win probability.

Alexander Blockx vs. Alexander Zverev Pick for Wimbledon on Tuesday
Blockx vs. Zverev Pick — 34.5 Total Games
Zverev convincingly defeated Blockx in their two meetings this season, winning 6-2, 7-5 in Madrid and then 6-1, 6-4 in Rome. The German faced just two break points across both matches, neither of which was converted.
While grass is historically Zverev’s worst surface, that’s all relative considering Tennis Abstract still rates him as the ATP Tour’s fourth-best player on grass entering the tournament.
In contrast, the far less experienced Blockx has played one career tour-level grass match, a loss to world No. 63 Zizou Bergs in 2025.
Even including Challenger and qualifying matches, he’s 4-4 across eight career grass matches, and Bergs is the lone opponent he’s faced ranked inside the top 100.
Thanasi Kokkinakis vs. Alexander Bublik Prediction for Wimbledon — Tuesday, June 30
Match Winner Payouts: Kokkinakis 2.85x | Bublik 1.38x
Estimated Start Time: 7:10 a.m. ET
Tournament Round: First Round
2026 Record Entering Wimbledon: Kokkinakis 2-1 | Bublik 20-14
Head-to-Head Record: Kokkinakis Leads 1-0
How to Watch: ESPN/ESPN App
Alexander Bublik is a deserving favorite against an injury-prone player who’s completed just three tour-level matches this season.
As shown by his world No. 11 ranking and nine career titles, Bublik is a talented player who can go on impressive stretches, but tends to falter against top-flight competition. He’s also rarely made deep runs at Grand Slams — his lone quarterfinal was in the 2025 French Open — and even first-round exits aren’t entirely uncommon.
While he was bounced in the first round at last year’s Wimbledon, if there was ever a major for Bublik to make some noise, it’s here. His 64.5% win percentage on grass is easily his best of the three surfaces, and he reached the fourth round at this event in 2023.
Thanasi Kokkinakis has struggled with injuries throughout his career, and that’s unfortunately been the case once again in 2026. Most of his recent matches have come at Challenger events, and he’s been forced into multiple retirements and walkovers throughout the season.
Kokkinakis did win a five-setter in the first round at the French Open, showing he can still be a tricky opponent when his body doesn’t let him down. But even if he’s healthy, the 30-year-old’s lackluster career grass record (5-8) doesn’t bode well for him against a strong opponent.
Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings project an 80.4% chance for a Bublik win.

Thanasi Kokkinakis vs. Alexander Bublik Pick for Wimbledon on Tuesday
Alexander Bublik — 21.5 Total Games Won
While Bublik is favored in this match, a victory might not come routinely
When healthy, Kokkinakis tends to play lengthy matches at Grand Slams. Since the start of 2024, the Australian has completed 11 major matches, and only one has finished in straight sets. Seven of those 11 matches have gone five sets.
Both players possess big serves, which could lead to potential tiebreaks. On grass, Bublik owns a 19.2% career ace rate while Kokkinakis is at 13.2%.
Both players tend to be below-average returners, further pointing to long stretches without a break of serve.
