Even in the modern NFL, defense remains a critical component of each and every game. We’ve seen some of the best passing attacks get silenced on the biggest of stages, doubling down on the age-old adage that defense wins championships. Will that trend continue this season?

1: Houston Texans

A brief look at the Houston Texans’ front line might be enough to convince you of a downright elite defense without even considering the rest of the talent behind it. The edge rusher duo of Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter is back and could be better than ever, and the interior tandem of Sheldon Rankins and Tommy Togiai is nothing to scoff at, either.

Houston possesses a relentless attack with quality LB talent and a lockdown secondary that can man up any set of receivers. Adding S Reed Blankenship to a backfield that already had CBs Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lassiter, and Jalen Pitre is unfair. 

The Texans don’t need to blitz to get home to the QB and don’t require exotic scheme decisions to blanket WRs and TEs. This is as thorough a defense as there is in the NFL.

2: Denver Broncos

Another year without DL Matt Henningsen won’t faze the Denver Broncos, who are led by OLB Nik Bonitto in terms of pass rush and CB Pat Surtain II in coverage. Sprinkle in other standouts like DE Zach Allen, CB Riley Moss, and S Talanoa Hufanga, and you get the makings of a complete unit.

No defense allowed a lower late-down success rate than Denver in the 2025-26 regular season, and no one posted a higher sack rate in those scenarios than its 16% mark (via SumerSports). DC Vance Joseph’s crew just so happens to also dominate early in drives, too. 

It was a quiet offseason for Denver on the defensive side of the football, but perhaps rookie DE Tyler Onyedim can emerge as an impactful role player down the line. Even if not, this is still an amazing collective that didn’t need to improve much (if at all).

3: Seattle Seahawks

It’s important to give the reigning champs their due, even after DE Boye Mafe and CB Riq Woolen departing in the offseason. Replacing some of that production might just come in the aggregate, especially considering the depth of this defense to begin with.

The Seattle Seahawks still possess difference-makers at all three levels, headlined by the wily veteran pairing of Leonard Williams and DeMarcus Lawrence in the trenches, LB Ernest Jones at the second level, and superstar CB Devon Witherspoon on the back end. 

The brilliance of the 2025 Hawks was their ability to tighten up in the red zone, evidenced by them ceding the lowest EPA per play (-0.23) in those situations. With HC Mike Macdonald leading the way, it’s hard to envision too much of a drop taking place.

4: Los Angeles Rams

Acquire Myles Garrett, then prosper. That’d be a more than serviceable plan for the Los Angeles Rams already, yet that ignores equally important improvements elsewhere.

After getting absolutely exposed throughout its playoff run, L.A.’s secondary brought in CBs Trent McDuffie (trade) and Jaylen Watson (free agency) from the Kansas City Chiefs. That solved the most glaring issue of a team that had a sneaky-productive defense in 2025 anyway.

If DT Aaron Donald ends up coming out of retirement after all, forget about it. The Rams have top-five defense written all over them.

5: Philadelphia Eagles

Sensing a theme here? The Philadelphia Eagles, much like the teams above them in the rankings, can make life difficult for the opposition from a variety of areas on the field. Want to attack the middle of the field? Good luck getting past DTs Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis or, heck, LB Zack Baun. Want to test the flats? Congrats, meet LB Jihaad Campbell. In the secondary, CBs Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean are lurking.

Philly also landed Woolen from Seattle, further fortifying a defense that allowed just 189.8 passing yards per game a season ago. GM Howie Roseman continues to construct uber-talented rosters on an annual basis, and this one is no different. 

The progress of pass rusher Jonathan Greenard (pec) is worth keeping an eye on, as he could make or break the ceiling of this unit.

6: Baltimore Ravens

The return of Jesse Minter to the Baltimore Ravens, this time as HC, could help restore order for a defense that’s typically one of the sport’s best. 

Baltimore got off to a slow start in 2025 and simply didn’t have the horses to clamp down and claw back into games. It ranked 21st with an 0.12 EPA/pass surrendered when trailing, underscoring what was an underwhelming group. Adding DE Trey Hendrickson and a healthy Nnamdi Madubuike into the fold should only assist in the arrow pointing upward again.

A slept-on pickup is DE Calais Campbell. The longtime Arizona Cardinals star may turn 40 years old by the time Week 1 arrives, although he still has positive snaps left in the tank.

7: New England Patriots

Getting more out of a roster than what appears on paper is the recent standard of the New England Patriots. Despite having middling personnel at multiple positions, they still got all the way to Super Bowl LX living on the edge. Speaking of edge, can Dre’Mont Jones and second-round rookie Gabe Jacas inject new dynamics into this pass rush?

Much of the alterations in Foxborough during the offseason took place on the offensive side of the ball. Investing in pieces to make QB Drake Maye’s life easier makes sense, although a signal-caller’s best friend can also be a top-flight defense. Led by DL Milton Williams and CB Christian Gonzalez, New England projects as close to that once again. 

Similar to Macdonald and the Seahawks, the Patriots will always compete on D with Mike Vrabel as their HC.

8: Jacksonville Jaguars

Last year’s Jacksonville Jaguars were otherworldly against the run, allowing the fewest YPG (85.6) of any NFL team and ceding -85 yards over expected (per NFL Pro). DC Anthony Campanile’s crew was sound at tackling, maintaining gap integrity, and nipping potentially explosive plays in the bud. 

In passing situations, DEs Travon Walker and Josh Hines-Allen can tee off and rush the QB. There aren’t many better duos in the sport. Should CB Travis Hunter (also a WR) grow in year No. 2 and stay healthy, the Jags’ secondary might be better than most expect, too. 

A team that won 13 games a season ago didn’t get there solely based on HC Liam Coen’s offensive brilliance.

9: Minnesota Vikings

Death, taxes, and Brian Flores being one of football’s most electric mad-scientist coordinators.

The Minnesota Vikings’ M.O. is to blitz opposing offenses into oblivion, and it oftentimes works. There’s an element of smoke and mirrors here, sure, but it isn’t like Minny doesn’t have an abundance of quality contributors on this side of the ball. 

Moving on from the aforementioned Greenard likely shouldn’t sink this defense, especially with LB Payton Turner making progress in his development and rookie DT Caleb Banks having such an exciting profile. Elsewhere, veterans Andrew Van Ginkel and Byron Murphy Jr. are as steady as ever. 

When Minnesota gets teams into obvious passing situations or the red zone, it might be the scariest group to face on this entire list.

10: Pittsburgh Steelers

Not many, if any, teams invest as many resources into their defense as the Pittsburgh Steelers. It hasn’t necessarily panned out to this point, but the collection of names remains astounding.

New DC Patrick Graham possesses plenty of options at his disposal in a proven, albeit aging, fleet of players. Health is wealth for a defense that includes DT Cameron Heyward, OLB T.J. Watt, and CBs Jalen Ramsey and Joey Porter Jr. 

The swing factor for this year’s Pittsburgh defense is late downs. It ranked 25th and 31st, respectively, in conversion rate allowed on third and fourth down. Should the Steel Curtain get off the field sooner, it might make a world of difference.
